With record high temperatures across most of the country, our gardens are screaming for water! A lot of you have had drought, and, plants are wilted and withering if you haven't been vigilant with your watering chores. I have fell guilty to "It's too hot to go outside", a few times, and, the plants show suffering from it. The best times to water is early in the morning, before the sun reaches your plants. A lot of you may not have time to water in the mornings, which is usually the case with me, as well. If so, wait until late evening, as the sun is going down, before you water. This time does tend to cause more mold on plants, as they stay wet all night. Just remember to avoid watering when the sun is beating down on your plants, as, this can actually scald and burn them, resulting in dead plants!
One thing that you may have noticed is that weeds tend to survive, even when your plants don't. Well, pulling up those weeds is essential. If left, they will compete with your plants for root space, and, yes - your lovely zinnias or bean plants will usually be the first to die out! We let the morning glory vines get ahead of us in our peppers and eggplants, and, the plants choked out, but, the morning glories are blooming like crazy! (I honestly think it's been said here, before - "we're not gonna let that happen, NEXT year!")
Tomatoes are producing like crazy, now. Keep them picked, and, if you have a lot of tomato plants, you can pick them and place them on an outdoor wooden table out of the sun, and, they will finish ripening, there. Don't put them on a metal table - I learned the hard way, one year - the acid will rust the metal. I have a wooden picnic table on my carport, and, the top of it is filled with big, yummy tomatoes. We've given so many away, people have stopped coming to visit.... (???)
Staying on top of those weeds and your thirsty plants will bring you a lovely bounty of vegetables to put back for winter, and, a gorgeous lawn full of flowers to enjoy for most of the hot summer
days! And, pray for a little rain, in the mean time - watering with a hose or sprinkler isn't quite as good as a good rainy downpour from Mother Nature!
