I'm pretty much on the very southwestern most extent of that pink oval. I recorded a little more than an inch in less than 45 minutes (though the snow is now reaching over the top of my ruler and I can't find a good tape measure - I would guess it's about 1.3-1.6 in/hr), and the snow is not showing signs of letting up.

I'm now past 17 inches, and apparently some areas around here have gotten upwards of 18. Still snowing at around 1-1.5 in/hr with not much more than an hour left in the day. The snow will occasionally blow sideways; visibility varies between 75-100+ meters (I don't have a line of sight further than about 100).

My friend in central Va said she got 30 inches of snow, and it is still snowing! I will be calling my grandma a little later to see if she has anywhere close to that, since she is right down the road. 30 inches wouldn't surprise me though, as some of the areas were reporting 9 inches last night by 8 pm.

Here are a couple pictures, and a report, from the NWS Office in Jackson, KY:

Heavy Snow Impacts Much Of Eastern Kentucky

A powerful snow storm blanketed east Kentucky overnight, dropping a range of 4 to 12 inches of snow east of a Sandy Hook to Campton to McKee to Whitley City Line. Some of the highest elevations on the Virginia border likely saw well over a foot of snow. Many reports of downed trees were received with numerous power outages from the very heavy and wet snow. Also, numerous accidents were reported with the snow overnight and many roads were closed due to the conditions. Snowfall totals were very elevation dependent. For instance, at the National Weather Service office in Jackson, 10 inches of snow was on the ground on Saturday morning, with a storm total of 11 inches. However, in the city of Jackson, just 4 miles away; roughly 4 inches of snow was on the ground. The city of Jackson is in a valley and the office is on a substantial ridge top. Below are some pictures from the office.

Its getting wild here. Mount Holly calling for 13-19 overnight. This could be the craziest night since 1996.

We must be in the eye right now here in Northern Virginia, as the snow has temporarily stopped, and there is minimal wind at 28 degrees F. So far we've measured 16 inches, just across the Memorial Bridge from Washington DC. Kids came over and used the hot tub this afternoon as only teens would do. DH shoveled and snow blowed the drive way and walks all day with my son just to stay ahead of the game, with success.

Tonight's forecast is for more snow, then close to 32 degrees with sun tomorrow. Our ground is already saturated from all of the last 30 day's rain. Maybe some pictures tomorrow. At it's worst it was almost complete white out baring a few feet of visibility.

Stay well,
WLD

This last one is from about 1/2 hour ago. It doesn't do the storm justice as to how bad it is snowing and blowing right now:

I think that the snow is coming down the hardest right now and the blowing and drifting is unbelievable!

I'm looking forward to providing pictures tomorrow after the storm. The difference in the snow depth from the afternoon is amazing!

"Just got off the phone with my parents, they got about 4 inches of heavy, wet snow that almost brought the power lines down. Grandma, in central Va, got about 21 inches, and a friend of mine down the road said she has about 30 inches. Another friend in eastern Maryland is reporting about 25 inches earlier, and still snowing hard"

I posted that on facebook about 2 hours ago

That certainly looks like some serious snow on the ground. About how many inches are on the ground at your house tonight if you know? You get snow like that every winter? I'm lucky to get maybe 1 to 3 inches every 10 years or so. I do get more sleet here than I do snow and lots of cold rain. Nice pics that you posted, I enjoyed looking at them.

Explain.

Last weekend to go Christmas shopping just went down the drain, since people can't make it out of their houses, or refuse to drive, air traffic just came to a grinding halt for not just America, but think of all the international flights that just got canceled, diverted, or seriously delayed! Presents that were enroute that had to pass through this zone probably just got delayed on the day that they either ship or arrive, stacked ontop of the damages for downed power lines, removal of downed trees, and damages caused by the ocean (overwash, damage to repair roads, houses, etc).

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we just watched everything get slapped around like it was nothing. Mother Nature just reminding us she is in charge, regardless of what season it is, and of how puny we really are.
