Yeah I felt sorry seeing all the snow birds coming down I-95 yesterday with VA, NY, etc license plates, but I guess compared to temps up north this is still baulmy to them.

I had sleet in Saint Petersburg between 3-4 AM...exactly like what I saw when I hiked
in NW Colorado 4 yrs ago during the summer there...there was sleet...
Now all rain and about 35*F.

My hopes for snow flakes in Orlando keep going down, 12z NAM never gets H85 subfreezing while the moisture is here for the next 3-4 hours.
Just light rain mixed in light sleet at times seems to be case for the next couple of hours or so.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TAMPA BAY RUSKIN FL
824 AM EST SAT JAN 9 2010

.UPDATE...WINTERY PRECIP FROM CITRUS TO HILLSBOROUGH/POLK
COUNTIES LOOKS TO BE QUICKLY TRANSITIONING TO PURELY RAIN AS THE
SUN RISES. OVERALL...THIS WAS BY FAR A COLD RAIN EVENT BUT WE DID
RECEIVE REPORTS OF SLEET AND EVEN A SNOWFLAKE OR TWO NORTH OF
PASCO. 12Z SOUNDING REALLY SAYS IT ALL THIS MORNING...A DEEP WARM
LAYER FROM 750-SFC MAINTAINED WIDESPREAD LIGHT RAIN SHOWERS. AS
EVIDENT FROM THE 12Z SOUNDING...AREAS SOUTH OF HERNANDO COUNTY
WHERE HEAVIER SHOWERS FELL ENHANCED EVAPORATIVE COOLING WHICH
PRODUCED POCKETS OF RAIN MIXED WITH SLEET. LOOKING AT SOUNDINGS
FROM JAX AND TLH...MUCH COOLER LOW LEVEL TEMPS FURTHER NORTH WOULD
SUPPORT THE CAUSE FOR BRIEF VERY LIGHT WET SNOW FOR
HERNANDO...CITRUS AND SUMTER COUNTY (PRECIP WAS FAR ENOUGH SOUTH
NOT TO AFFECT LEVY). THIS WAS ACTUALLY THE CASE AT X40 (INVERNESS)
WHERE A BRIEF PERIOD OF LIGHT SNOW WAS REPORTED BUT OVERALL THE
DOMINATE PRECIP WAS RAIN MIXED WITH AREAS OF SLEET. FROM PICTURES
WE HAVE RECEIVED FROM LOCAL MEDIA OUTLETS...AREAS NORTH OF PASCO
DEFINITELY RECEIVED MORE SLEET COMPARED TO HILLSBOROUGH/POLK.
THIS MATCHES UP PRETTY WELL FROM 12Z SOUNDING INTERPOLATIONS
ACROSS THOSE AREAS.

HAVE JUST REMOVED ALL FORMS OF FROZEN PRECIP FROM THE GRIDS AS
LIGHT RAIN IS BEING REPORTED ACROSS THE BOARD
. OTHERWISE...CURRENT
FORECAST LOOKS TO BE ON TRACK BUT WILL KEEP AN EYE ON THE HIGHS
TODAY AND ADJUST ACCORDINGLY.

I disagree with that move for TBW, at least for the northern areas. It's cold enough that it could drop a bit more and quickly and suddenly change over at least to sleet (or freezing rain?)

I know you guys are excited by the chance of seeing frozen precipitation but I'm just horrified by even the thought of it so far south.

Me too Stephanie. Spoke to some old neighbors in the Lower Keys yesterday. They are not prepared for this kind of cold down there. Shelters are being setup from Key Largo to Key West. Many of the homes as well as live aboard (sailboat, house boats etc...) have no heat! There is also a very large homeless population in the Keys as well. They often sleep in the Mangroves. :(

It may shock most outsiders not used to weather, but it is definitely something of a novelty that people should have been prepared for - it has been cold all week there. (Of course, even the coldest weather there would seem warm for me, being used to temperatures of 20, 30, even 40 below zero). After all in 1977, there were snowflakes in Miami Beach and sleet in the Bahamas!

If it was accumulating significantly, that would be something unprecedented though.

Holy crap - had another round of sleet and it was coming down pretty good. I really feel for the folks that have to work outside today. This is nasty stuff.

NWS Miami snippet:

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MIAMI FL
1016 AM EST SAT JAN 9 2010

...CRAZY, COLD MISERABLE SOUTH FL DAY...
...FREEZE WARNINGS ISSUED FOR PARTS OF THE AREA...

NEED TO MENTION THE FACT THAT THERE HAS BEEN SOME SLEET ACROSS
PORTIONS OF CENTRAL FLORIDA ESPECIALLY ALONG AND NORTH OF TAMPA TO
ORLANDO. FORECAST SOUNDINGS SHOWS WET BULB ZERO HEIGHTS CRASHING
TO BELOW 1 K FT ACROSS THE LAKE REGION BY 00Z THIS EVENING. IT IS
GOING TO END UP BEING A RACE BETWEEN THE COLD AIR AND ENDING
PRECIP. THE PRECIP LIKELY WILL END BEFORE IT GETS COLD ENOUGH TO
SUPPORT ANYTHING MORE THAN RAIN ACROSS THE SERVICE AREA.
HOWEVER...AS HAS BEEN MENTIONED THE PREVIOUS FEW DAYS...THERE IS A
REMOTE POSSIBILITY OF A LITTLE SLEET MIXING IN WITH THE LIGHT RAIN
BY THIS EVENING ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE PRECIP SHIELD...MAINLY
NORTH OF AN EVERGLADES CITY TO WEST PALM BEACH LINE
. THE
PROBABILITY OF THIS OCCURRING IS LOW ENOUGH TO CONTINUE TO EXCLUDE
THIS MENTION IN THE OFFICIAL FORECAST...AND IF IT OCCURRED IT
WOULD HAVE NO ADVERSE IMPACTS. IT`S CRAZY TO EVEN HAVE TO DISCUSS
THIS IN SOUTH FLORIDA!!

I love his last line! lol
When I lived here many moons ago we got to see snow falling. Of course once it hit the ground it was pretty much gone, but it was amazing to see. I am kinda hoping it happens again. It is so pretty to watch fall. As he said though the chances are slim. :(
