3rd year in a row for snow in Southeast Texas?

#1 Postby southerngale » Sat Nov 20, 2010 3:50 pm

We had measurable snow in December, 2008, and in December, 2009. Do you think we can be so lucky as to get snow for the third year in a row?

I'd say with some of the signals beginning to show up that it is not out of the question. :cheesy:

Possible? Yes. Probable? Very hard to say. As Steve says some things in the patterns are starting to suggest the possibility. However, I have to say that until the storm track moves from where it is set up now(and I am talking in the CONUS and the Pacific) I don't see that probability being very high this year. I know, I know, I am a grinch but you asked. I want the snow as bad as you do.

A strong La Nina would argue against snow in SE TX this year. I'd agree - very unlikely. Of course, it's very unlikely in any year. ;-)

Snow in southeast Texas typically requires an active southern storm track. It is the southern storm track that produces the lifting once we have cold air in place. An active southern storm track is common during an El Nino winter, as in 2009, but not during a strong La Nina winter. The jet stream in La Nina is displaced farther north, significantly reducing the chances of post-frontal precip here. We can get some cold air, but generally it's a dry cold during La Nina. I think that we'll see a few shots of cold air over the next 4-5 weeks, with temps averaging near normal for Nov/Dec. But by January, La Nina will have a strong influence, keeping the really cold air out of our area. We may average 2-4 degrees above normal in Jan/Feb. More sunshine than last winter, and considerably warmer afternoon highs.

No snow for us this winter.

Thanks for your input, wxman57. If it's gonna be cold though, I hope we can somehow squeeze some snow out of it. It's so pretty and I'm getting used to these annual snowball fights.

I'm with you this year, though. I miss the warmth already and I'm looking forward to spring. I don't know what's wrong with me. lol

Well, maybe not the third year (was 12/08 & 12/09), but the third winter season is looking quite possible. Image

Who woulda thunk it? 'twas wishful thinking when I first posted this.

Thanks for bumping this thread, I had forgot about it. Sort of amazing to see how things actually unfolded since way back then in November, isn't it? :cheesy:

In my part of SE Texas it snowed in april 2007 and in 2010... This would make 5 straight years around Lake Livingston after a very long period of not much of anything.... Longest stretch I can find in our history...

I love it.. Winter is much cooler now...

In 2009/2010 I saw moderate snow falling on 7 different days with two being 1 plus inches..
