Midwest/Great Lakes storm - December 10 to 13

#1 Postby RL3AO » Thu Dec 09, 2010 10:51 pm

Bizarre system here. The models have shifted 400 miles in the past 24 hours. Very complex. Forecast has gone from be getting a bit of slush/snow to 10 to 12 inches of snow for me.

Latest forecast for Columbus is 2" - 4" thru Monday.

Winter Storm Watch issued for the Pittsburgh area. 6"+ for them.

tough call for PIT. they are too far south for good lake effect and west of the higher elevations. PIT's winter storm watch issuance was interesting...surprising they included 2 of their eastern ohio counties and WV panhandle...those areas will likely wind up with advisories while areas off to the north and east get dumped on. CLE's WSW text was solid, calling for up to 2 feet. Burton, in Geauga county, just got over three feet this week alone!

0z NAM gives me 24 inches of snow.

They've seemed to be pushing south. 72 hours ago I was thinking 3 inches tops. Now 16 is possible, if not probable.

a good chunk of mn,wi and mi are gonna get clobbered. time to hibernate, build a fire and put on a big pot of chili. some of the accumulation estimates from the synoptic snows are impressive... lots of 1'+ amounts. and then the lake effect will equal 2'+ in the usual areas.

I haven't had the time to watch the models, but I did take note that the local mets were all over the palce. Dave Dahl had this pegged though the other day.

Both the GFS and NAM are about 75 miles south. They put the heaviest snow between Hastings and Rochester then NE into Wisconsin. They're both also showing 1.5+ inches precip over SE Minnesota. 22.5 inches if you use 15 to 1 ratio. Overestimated sure, but still hints that 16 to 20 is possible.

Anyway, I think the NWS/local news are too far north.

My forecast would be take WCCO, shift everything 40 miles south and bump everything up 2 inches.

Well to qualify it, I guess Dahl stated that there will "big" snow close to the cities.......so, in a sense he had it an inkling. So did the "turtle"........Paul Douglas.

Awesome pics. Looks like the weather is downright perilous in those MSP shots on the weather channel. Enjoy the snow!

The Patriots-Bears game tomorrow ought to be a real fun one. Weather at kickoff is supposed to be heavy snow, winds 30-35 mph out of the northwest gusting to 55 mph, and temperatures near 20 degrees!

Enjoy your snowstorm, folks. I'm jealous! :ggreen:
