Isn't the NAO still strongly negative for the period around, say, the 16th of the month? That's one good indication that the old blocking pattern sets up again across Greenland and forces the true Arctic air into North America and the lower 48. Sooooo, it just looks delayed to me.

A cold front went through here today and we're sitting here at -19F at 9:45 PM, but it's still not anywhere near record breaking and isn't anything unusual.

The GFS shows now a stronger high and a stronger pressure gradient in Central America, the Euro is in agreemnt and shows very strong winds from the Gulf of Tehuantepec down to the Gulf of Papagayo (from southern Mexico to Costa Rica). It seems that the event may start on Tuesday night and continue through Sunday morning. The day with the strongest winds will be Friday and the coldest temperatures may occur during that day and Saturday.

Blech ... the 0z model runs do not continue the trend of Arctic Armageddon which we saw yesterday.

No bitter cold was "supposed" to come down. Models projected building cold air in NW Canada with the possibility that the building cold air could result in a significant Arctic outbreak. But it was only a possibility, extreme cold was never forecast. Once we could see what kind of air actually moved into NW Canada last weekend, it was clear that only a tiny bit of Arctic air would move south.
