The MJO is the madden Julian Oscillation, it's an atmospheric oscillation in the tropics that enhances convection in a part of the world and supresses convection in another part, then it propagates eastward enhancing and supressing convection in other regions. When the enhanced phase is over a region that region will experience above average rainfall for 1 or 2 weeks and when the supressed phase is in place the region it will experience drier than normal conditions. The wet phase of the MJO also enhances tropical cyclone activity in the northern hemisphere. The MJO is not always present and sometimes the signal is very weak as it was most of last year, sometimes the signal is strong as it was on 2008 when it played an important role in the activity of 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. A pro met could explain it better but you could read more info here:

A nice start on understanding SSW Events...

A sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) is an event where the polar vortex of westerly (eastwards) winds in the Northern winter hemisphere abruptly (i.e. over the course of a few days) slows down or even reverses direction, accompanied by a rise of stratospheric temperature by several tens of kelvins. This is considered to be the most dramatic meteorological event in the stratosphere.
