Officially -33F in Craig this morning, so I guess we're on a warming trend -40F official weather station, -48F on our min gauge). We still had the nation's low (incuding Alaska) this morning.

Today the afternoon actually did reach just above zero for a few minutes for the first time since January. It's not that far below zero, so I'm going on a jog.

LOL! I skipped classes today because it was 30 F and that was simply too cold for me! I couldn't imagine going jogging in this temp, let alone below 0!

I skipped classes today because it was 30 F and that was simply too cold for me!
We get that cold (or colder) in July and August.

Why is it so cold there?
High elevation, low humidity, snow cover, a location that is long way from any ocean, inversions and a valley location surrounded by hills and mountains where the cold air tends to sink to the bottom of the valley.
Places like Gunnison CO, Fraser CO, West Yellowstone MT, and Stanley Idaho have similar characteristics.
The continental divide is also flat NE of here allowing cold air to come over the divide and sink into the valley bottoms.
Places like North Dakota or northern MN are cold for different (and some similar reasons). Those places are fairly far north and as we are, are also far from the ocean, but they are also in a location with no mountain barriers to the north all the way to the arctic so cold air can sink down directly from the arctic with no barriers to stop it. The valleys in the Rockies such as where I live are farther south and have mountain barriers to the north, but we make up for this with our high elevation. low humidity (radiative cooling) and inversions.

You really must love the snow!!
