29 the low for me tonight. :froze:

Far cry from those 110's just a couple months ago.

One interesting thing of note, a few of the models are starting to develop a 'panhandle hook' towards the end of next week.

Hello again S2K! It's been a long time..

After my most extended absence from posting (~8 months) since I joined the site in 2005, the recent cool down has helped to finally draw me back.

I can't promise I'll ever post as frequently as I used to, or be quite as enthusiastic about the various 'crazy' model scenarios that I was likely once known for, but i'll definitely try my best to continue being at least an occasional part of the discussion in the months ahead as we march toward yet another fascinating winter season in the southern plains. :)

In the near term, it is going to be quite interesting to see just how cold Will Rogers Airport gets tonight. The latest metar shows a temperature of 2C/35.6F. If the temperature can fall just a few more degrees before sunrise, then this will be the earliest first freeze date in Oklahoma City since the year 2000. It would also fall a little more than two weeks earlier than the average date of KOKC's first autumn freeze (November 4th). Even if KOKC doesn't hit the "official" freezing mark though, this weather is still quite the contrast from the record-breaking heat we were experiencing not too long ago..

( :uarrow: Update: The temperature never quite made it to 32F. According to the hourly reports, the lowest KOKC fell last night was 34F).

0z GFS tonight was very interesting. Showed Wintery Precipitation across a wide chunk of Oklahoma in about 6-7 days. The GFS showed this about 2 days ago, but dropped it. Now showing it again. Not much, but might be worth watching for some early season flake or pellets.

That's actually a pretty decent swatch around St. Louis

The upper level shortwave trough is no longer looking quite as powerful on the latest model runs as compared to a few days ago. If this trend verifies, then I doubt that there will be any snowflakes or ice pellets making their way into most of the southern plains with this week's event. There could perhaps be a little mixing over in the TX/OK panhandles, but for most of Oklahoma and north Texas it will probably be just rain. This scenario is in line with climatology, which suggests that snowfall east of the panhandles is rare during late October (it has happened, but the odds are against it).

The rain that falls will likely be a chilly rain though, with most of Oklahoma only in the upper 30s to middle 40s Wednesday night. Also, depending on how fast the shortwave (and its associated height falls/upward motion leading to clouds/precip upstream of the axis) moves east , I wouldn't be too surprised to see much of the region stuck in the 40s and 50s for high temperatures on Thursday. This outcome fits well with the slower shortwave motion depicted by the GFS and especially the ECMWF. The NAM on the other hand, is much more progressive with the shortwave trough, and thus would allow for warmer temperatures (50s and 60s) and less cloud cover Thursday afternoon.

Thanks guys! It's good to be back.

A few notes tonight on the incoming event::

-The shortwave to our west looks to have taken the slower route I mentioned a couple of days ago. This means that clouds and precipitation should continue over the area into the afternoon. The result of this will be a high likelihood of "chilly" afternoon maximum temperatures, ranging only from the mid 40s to mid 50s for most of the region (coldest in the areas that see the most persistent rain and cloud cover).

-The shortwave is also slightly stronger than what the models were trending towards a couple of days back. The result of this can clearly be seen in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles tonight where winter weather advisories (calling for 1-2" of snow) are currently in effect. The stronger shortwave and in turn colder upper level temperatures may also allow for the possibility of a few snowflakes getting a little further east than thought 48 hours ago as well. This includes areas of extreme western and northwestern Oklahoma, where using the top-down method on forecasted GFS soundings such as this one ( http://www.twisterdata.com/index.php?so ... hive=false ) just northwest of Sayre, OK, indicate the modest possibility of a little bit of wintry precipitation reaching the ground. Cloud top temperatures near -40C indicate a 100% chance that ice is prevalent in the cloud. The column is also nicely saturated with a beautiful southwesterly flow near the dendritic growth zone (~460-530mb in this particular case), which bodes well for the formation of large snowflakes in that region. The falling precipitation then stays below the melting point of 0C until about 700mb, where it goes on to straddle the 0C line (+/- 1C) all the way down to 900-925mb or so. The biggest negative in this sounding is the warming that then takes place into the mid/upper 30s near the immediate surface. However, given the large flakes aloft and a potentially decent precipitation rate, I wouldn't at all be surprised to hear of some mixing near and perhaps just east of the TX/OK border tomorrow morning, especially if the atmospheric state were to wind up a little bit colder than the current GFS forecast.

With that all said though, this is still out in far western Oklahoma, and for the main population centers of Wichita Falls up through OKC and Tulsa, the precipitation type should remain just a cold rain..as can be seen in the following forecast sounding forecasts from the latest GFS and NAM respectively: (http://www.twisterdata.com/index.php?so ... hive=false , http://www.twisterdata.com/index.php?so ... hive=false). Both of these soundings show a much more pronounced warm layer aloft as well as warmer surface temperatures. This means that while there will also be large snowflakes in the clouds above our heads, they should have all melted into rain by the time they reach our doorsteps.

If only the low-levels were a good 5-10+ degrees colder...
:)

[Thursday, 9:48am Update --> Looking at things again this morning, it appears as though surface temperatures never got quite chilly enough for the mixing to take place in extreme western Oklahoma near the OK/TX border. Most of that zone only got down to about 38-42F overnight/this morning, which is a few degrees too high. I would have liked to have seen at least 36F, but preferably closer to 32-34F before I would have anticipated any snowflakes reaching the surface. Oh well. It's still only October. Given a few more weeks things might have turned out differently.]

It's gonna be a miserable night across Oklahoma tomorrow night. Lows in the 30's with rain and winds gusting up to 40mph behind the front.

0zECMWF is advertising some light snow for Northern Oklahoma next Wednesday Night/Morning with some heavier snow for Kansas. Its going to be interesting what the 12z run has to say.

VERY sharp gradient with this front. Upper 60's ahead, lower 40's directly behind it.

The post-frontal environment we are currently experiencing is the first time that it has really felt truly "winter-like" so far this cool season. The temperature here is currently only in the lower 40s with occasional drizzle and very gusty winds (generating a sub-freezing wind chill). Hard to believe it was in the middle 60s just six or so hours ago!

Last night at about 3AM, for a short time there was rain with small flurries mixed in. Lasted about 5 minutes.

Was pretty cool.

Brrr.

We got down into the mid 20s here last night (via the mesonet), with lots of frost.

We haven't seen temperatures in this range since early March, so this is quite a shock to the system.

I refuse to believe the 12z EURO. Shows a decent snow over much of Oklahoma is just 7 days.

After that Winter Storm, the GFS wants to make the cold last for several days. Could be chilly times ahead!

The new run still has a good amount of snow for central Oklahoma.
