The problem with underground lines is that they can be damaged too, and are much harder to fix. Tree roots will break them or tear them up in a heartbeat, then you have to find the break, dig it up, fix it and rebury it.

Last spring we had about that much wet snow sitting on our garage roof...it has a steel centre beam but we still worried and so got up there and did some shovelling. Some roofs in town collapsed under the weight but they were prolly built with a stupid flat roof (like our garage...but it at least has the steel beam). Any roof that doesn't have any steepness to it will be worrisome (our house roof is so steep it terrifies shinglers...its also 3 stories up). We will never ever shovel anything off it.

Just like sewer lines. You have trees, the roots will eventually find their way into them. In this case, I'd rather take my chances with the wires underground with the Nor'easters, winter storms and severe weather. I know too many people in older developments with the wires on poles that lose their power constantly.

Me too, being as I am one of those who loses power because the above ground lines are down.

The prior place that I rented all had wires above ground and I was losing power constantly..it didn't even have to be a bad storm. The house that I bought now has wires underground, in fact the electric box is on our lawn for the neighborhood. I don;t mind that we can see when PECO comes out to work on it.

Our power flickered but it never went out, thankfully! I know if I see was living in Philly or renting, it would still be out!

If the media overhyped this event, would people have been better or worse prepared? Like if they mentioned this could be basically Hurricane Irene dressed as a ghost for Halloween...

One thing I believe is that one factor that made the storm so bad was Irene - millions upon millions of trees were likely weakened significantly during that storm, and that allowed the snow this weekend to finish the job. Yes, it would have been really bad regardless especially where they got the big numbers (i.e. over 12 inches), but that made it worse as the weakened trees did not stand a chance when weighted down by even the lesser amounts of snow (as little as 3-4 inches). The areas with the least tree damage relative to snow amounts (western Maryland, the Virginia highlands) were the areas hit least by Irene.

IMO, a Service Assessment Team should be set up by the NWS for this storm, if one hasn't already.

You could make the same argument that the trees were "pruned" by Irene and that without her this could even have worse. If memory serves in the past when all the hurricanes went across Florida in 2004 there was less new tree damage and power outage with each successive storm.

I don't think it was overhyped. I think that the amount of snow forecasted was starting to raise some eyebrows. If they described this storm like Hurricane Irene dressed as a ghost, I honestly wonder how many would've taken it as seriously. We've had Nor'easters here in October before, just not with snow. This was an anomoly, just like the many anomlies we've had the past few years with weather and earthquakes...

I agree with your conclusion. in 2004 we had more tree damage from hurricane frances than jeanne even though jeanne delivered higher winds. Frances has culled the heard a few weeks prior. as bad as this was it would have been worse were it not for Irene's visit...there would have been more trees to fall. as for crazy's point regarding western maryland and western virginia...trees in these areas lose their foliage earlier...that's what saved these regions from more extensive damage imo as opposed to being spared by irene.
