Looks like finally a good chance of snow Wednesday. Nam so far a bit drier than gfs but both would have at least a few inches. Also Christmas day to new years looks stormy and cold.

Winter storm watch is up. Doesn't look too big here in the plains but doesn't look bad either. Both models have Denver in the .25-.5 inch range. Shoud be cold enough for 20:1 ratios so 5-10 seems good for Denver. Maybe 6-12 in the northeast corner. Will be some wind to deal with too. Looking forward.

Christmas day storm looking good too. Too bad I'll be in mississippi! Also looks mighty cold heading into new years, although maybe not much snow.

Guess I spoke too soon. Nam overnight came in with a good deal less and gfs was a bit less. Lookin more like 3-6 now. Prolly will eat just an advisory not a warning. Canadian also has the main slug of moisture up toward the WY border like Nam. Hope this one isn't a dud for Denver!

12/21/12 - 4" from this storm in downtown Fort Collins, giving us a STD total of a whopping 9."

12/25/12 - 3" from the Christmas storm. STD = 12."

Know it hasn't been too much of winter but things seem to be lookin up. Got some good good snows in December , mountains and ski reports finally doing well also.

Going forward as I'm sure some of you have seen, looking like the west is getting set up for a prolonged cold and perhaps snowy period starting this coming Friday. Pattern overall supports it and it is getting mighty cold in the nw territories Canada. Gfs and Euro starting to settle in a bit. Seems to good agreement between the 2 for a first blow of arctic air dropping down for next weekend with lows below zero and maybe single digit highs for Sunday. Then it looks like a slight "warm up", followed by potentially another bigger blast in the Tuesday to Wednesday period. Well haveto wait and see oN that as it could get shunted east. Either way though cold looks promising with the area struggling to break above freezing from about Friday the 11th through to 20th even if the second batch never makes it. And with the 2 shots of cold there appears to be a decent shot of snow. Here's hoping!

So it looks like we might be denied a true arctic outbreak. Latest models still have a lot of cold air in canada next week, but seems to hang mostly in the upper plans to MN before swinging into Ontario, rather than spilling down the plains. This is more typical scenario. Still looks to get cold this weekend, but not AS cold. Maybe no below zeros for lows, maybe closer to 20 for highs. As far as snow friday night, thats trickier. Euro and CMC not giving much. GFS is showing quite a little storm for the plains with some 6+ inch amounts. Still plenty of watch time there though.

To be clear, going beyond the initial cold this weekend, it still looks to be cold, just typical January cold though and truly nasty stuff. STill looks like both GFS and Euro hold on to west troughiness through at least 240 hrs. So we stand a chance to see another week of below freezing temps like we saw from Christmas eve to New Years.

So DIA is up to a whopping 13 inches so far this season. Normal is ~27. The beat goes on and another dismal winter folds into another dismal fire season. Here's hoping for a pattern change . If this keeps up another couple years I may be moving to wetter place. I did not have "desert southwest" in mind when I moved from Mississippi. Portland and Seattle are looking better and better.

Well Colorado is generally dry.The pattern we are in just is not good for snow.I keep hoping for a good storm but they just never materialize.

I know it's generally dry, and I don't totally mind that. I do wish it was a little wetter...but it's not supposed to be like this. We only got 10 inches 2012 which was almost 40% below average. Snow so far is 50% for the season and the mountains aren't doing much better. But Denver is a different climate than almost anywhere in the state. We are actually just about the only plains location that gets plentiful snow. But in 5 out of the 7 winters I've been here we've been below average. i dont expect to have snow cover all winter, but We even get more than higher places in the state like Colorado Springs, and Alamosa. So it's just super disappointing. At this point I'm just hoping for an average year with normal precip and no 5 day streaks of hundred plus temps. Decent snow for the next couple months would just be icing.

Yes I know what you mean.I lived in Salt lake city. That's a climate you would love. They get plenty of moisture and you get the same benefits of mountains.I plan to go back possibly for other reasons besides weather if you know what I mean lolI see a horrible fire season and water restrictions.

Salt lake city is actually drier than Denver! WE to in Denver get the benefit from the mountains but we also benefit from the gulf of mexico and the canadian arctic air. SLC has a hard time getting the true cold air because of the rockies. When it comes to summer, Denver pummels SLC in the amount of moisture and is a couple degrees cooler than SLC.

Lived in salt lake and am a meteorology student (if you were wondering)

True ..I thought the totals were about the same as far as snow? With the benches getting more. Your def right on no rain or moisture in the summer. It never rains lol.The winters always seem to mild with minor arctic intrusions. Except for the inversion days or weeks.I lived in the cashe valley and when you got one it would stay bitterly cold for weeks.I think Salt lake climate is much like Spokane if you have ever been there.
