NSSL/NWS Need YOUR Help!

#1 Postby brunota2003 » Wed Dec 12, 2012 7:21 pm

From the US National Weather Service Eastern Region HQ's Facebook page. Thought y'all would be interested, if you haven't already seen it:

"The NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) needs your help! The Precipitation Identification Near the Ground (PING) project is looking for volunteers to report observations of various types of precipitation. These observations will be used by NSSL researchers to develop and improve the new dual polarization algorithms from the recently upgraded NEXRAD radars. Because the radars cannot see close to the ground, especially at far distances it is important to have observations at the surface for comparison. NSSL scientists will combine the radar data and model data with these observations to create an advanced next generation of radar algorithms.

You can find more information about the PING project at:
http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/projects/ping/

There are a couple of different ways that you can contribute your observations. You can submit them via the web at the above link. In addition, NSSL, in collaboration with Oklahoma University, as developed a free app for mobile devices that you can use to submit your reports. The iOS version of the app (for iPhones, IPads, etc...) called mPing (for mobile PING) has just been released. An Android version will be available very soon. You can download the iOS version from the Apple app store or you can also find it at:
http://filedir.com/ios/education/mping-for-ios-4651778.html

NSSL is also developing a web page that will allow you to see the real-time reports that are submitted. That page will also be available soon. We will post when that page and the Android version of the mPing app becomes available. Thank you for your contribution to this important project."
