Family in West Haven, CT recording 38 inches of snow....that has to be a record..lol if not WOW

Was a nice storm up here. Very beautiful.

Euro was the best model for this storm. It was consistent on the track and snowfall amounts the entire way painting 20-30+ inches in southern New England. GFS was good for a time but near the end backed off the totals and often was too far east. Being the higher resolution model shows how efficient it is at mesoscale features and timing than the GFS.

Have to give some love to the NAM that was not too far from what occured but definitly the ECMWF was stellar.

Preliminary NESIS rating was assessed for the KU blizzard of Feb 2013 storm by NOAA. It ranks 25th in terms of impact to the east as a major 3 (4.35 points). In perspective 2009-10 and 2010-11 had bigger events that effected a larger area so in reality this was a more smaller scale regional impact (mostly southern New England) despite setting numerous records in states like Connecticut and Mass.

Now you might be wondering why there isn't more areas of 30+ depicted on the map for Connecticut. Well few official recording sites actually had that much. It was public reports that had them and this is due to lack of sites for recording (look to funding).

I have friends that live out in Long Island and they had 24 - 30 inches of snow. It doesn't seem like NY was prepared to do anything about the storm until after it passed. Those roads were horrible and a mall that I went to when I was growing up had many leaks in the ceiling and speculation of a roof collapse. There was another mall roof collapse on the Island as well.

Roads are never great right after a huge storm like this, but the chunks of ice that were on the road, the number of people stranded on the Long Island Expressway, it's just inexcusable. It doesn't seem like they prepped the roads at all prior to the storm. It reminded me of what the roads would've looked like back in the 70's when I was living there. With today's technology and the use of brine solutions, the roadways wouldn't have frozen over nearly as fast. I'm just shocked.
