Perhaps it isn't as crazy as it sounds.

Here are the weather records for Chicago for the maximum snowfall on each day covering the last 131 years. It has never snowed 6 inches on Christmas Day. In the past 131 years, the max was 5.1 inches back in 1950.



Of course, since it has snowed that much on other December days, it should be possible to snow that much on Christmas as well. The odds however are still overwhelmingly in the dealer's favor.

Also, daily totals are smaller than 24 hour totals. Let's say snow 10" of snow falls at a fairly constant rate starting at 6 PM on December 24 and ending 6 AM on the 25th. The 24 hour snow total would be 10", but the daily snow total would only be 5" for each day. That's why daily records are almost always lower than 24 hour records.

It is very likely that the car dealer purchased insurance for this deal, but from a statistical standpoint, the odds are very much with the dealer.

The odds of it happening on Christmas Day (or any other specific day for the month) are 2385 to 1. The dealer is actually smarter than it appears and will likely come out ahead.
