Recalling Winter '06-'07

#1 Postby WeatherGuesser » Tue Dec 15, 2015 4:38 pm

On the Texas thread, there were a number of comments recalling a brutally bitter Winter in '07 after a warmer period in late '06.

I looked it up for KPAH and find it was rather mild and even pleasant with temps often in the 50s and 60s and little if any snowfall.

Can it really have been so different a few hundred miles NE?

Not directly Texas related, but I will long remember Winter 2006/2007 up here in New Brunswick. We had no lasting snow pack until January 15th then things turned brutally cold, and our resulting near record setting snow pack didn't fully melt until May 10th in most open areas (our final snowstorm 4-6 inches was on May 17th) longer in wooded areas.

I don't remember much of anything of note in 06-07 where I lived in AL at the time. That was the last of several snowless winters in a row there.

til the tornado outbreak on March 1.

Hmmm. That may have been the year we had upper 60s and low 70s for much of Jan and Feb down here across SE TX.

Ice Storm and extended freezing temperatures arrived mid January and led to 48 hours of Freezing rain/drizzle across much of Metro Houston. Other parts of the State across the Hill Country and East Texas experienced some significant freezing rain totals. It was a nasty miserable weather pattern...

Checking on the Houston Hobby top 10 warmest months it was more than likely Jan and Feb 2000. Feb 2008 was also very warm.

2006-2007 was a moderate Eastern Equatorial El Nino.

January and February 200 was warm as it was a strong La Nina. Same goes with February 2008.

There was a freeze in January 2007. Another freeze came in Easter 2007.

Oh that spurned a memory... we had temps near 90 in March and all the flowers were in full bloom and then the most devastating freeze I've ever seen hit on Easter 2007... and then we had a bad drought/heat in the summer which hurt them even more

Not so much in January. Dec-Jan of 2006-2007 was mild for most of the country. It was February 2007 that featured the displacement of Arctic air across the eastern CONUS. You might want to do a re-analysis of that month

^ Nothing dramatic. Cool, but not bitterly cold. Only two lows 10 degrees or below. Only 4 days that didn't get above 30 for highs while most days were 40 or more with many above 50.

Not even close to the nasty cold of last February with so many teens and twenties for highs.

Thats right, we had a snow/ice storm for Easter that year. I remember it being brutally cold here in Houston. Also in Feb here we had some icing. Crazy. I think we have something similar.
