In other news, it is quite humid today. Maybe some rain and thunder tomorrow? I also noticed yesterday our averages are starting to climb. Boo.

Image above was hot linked, so it keeps updating, but it was only going out to P6 when posted. It has indeed continued to roll and now the models are showing it moving towards P8. Cold times ahead :cold:

Yep, this is swinging back around to where we were in Mid Dec, right before this extremely cold period we just experienced. But this time, our source region is much much colder. Lets just hope the positive PNA doesn't get too carried away again!!

Ntxw, when did it get colder and snowier? Was it in mid Feb on or before that? 1978 was a true niño and this winter isn't. We don't need real cold air but just cold enough.

Regarding the Feb 1978 Dallas snow:

February 17, 1978
The last in a series of five snow events that began in mid-January also had the greatest totals. Between 4-8 inches fell from Throckmorton to Gainesville and north of a line through Dublin, Cleburne, Terrell, and Sulphur Springs.

It was around the second week of Feb that 1978 went to town after a really cold start to Jan and mid Jan.

1978 was an El Nino, but around this time it was similar to a modoki El Nino. This is where tropical convection happens near the dateline. We have an East based La Nina, in cases I think the tropical forcing has some ability to extend east from the maritime continent for example via the MJO. When Nino 4 waters are near or greater than 28C because the whole configuration is shifted east vs your full blown basin Nina.

Simply saying El Nino or La Nina isn't enough. Their behaviors differ in where they shift the walker circulation. In some ways an east based Nina can behave like a modoki El Nino. Where a western Nina may behave like a full blown east based Nino on how they construct the tropical forcing.

Got some exciting news that is loosely related winter weather (it can be severe weather, too, right?! ... lol) ... I have been asked to present at the Austin SKYWARN event on February 3, 2018, on the little local weather project of which I am part. It's called the Travis County Virtual Operations Support Team or VOST. So, if any of you attend the event, by all means please come up and say hello.

If I can find a way to plug Storm2K, I will do that!

It feels great outside today after all of the recent cold. So nice to wear shorts again. Don't want it any warmer than 80 though.
