Do not worry Professor, Lake Erie should be thawed out by June. :D

It's been relatively warm here, It was in the 40s this past weekend and close to 60 today. I'd be lying if I said 60 didn't feel cooler in Texas though.

Very slim chance of any additional winter weather in NE TX. Wouldn't rule it out completely, but it would take a significant pattern change by mid March or so. Azaleas are blooming in Houston, robins are heading back north. Nature is telling us that spring is coming sooner rather than later.

Good thing I'm not in NE TX! Yea, I figure as much. Even way up this way I have some bluebonnets on my property that have started breaking ground.

I'd say you're definitely in NE TX, but your chances of any additional winter weather are a little higher than the DFW area. Bluebonnets are starting to bloom in SE TX, and I had the first report of a June bug this past weekend.

However, I do have to say that the last time you said no real winter weather in TX, a few days later this area and much of NW and North TX had a major ice storm and accumulating sleet. :D

Bubba, do you think we can sneak in one more opportunity before winter is over? Somewhere in southern plains or midsouth based on how the pattern looks to be evolving?

I'm not a moderator, but I don't imagine it is a problem. The spring thread still is locked presently, so it isn't like you could post over there yet anyway.

Also, regarding spring:

I hope so but the models are now edging into mid-March and climo really starts to work against most of Texas by that point. Even a favorable pattern might not be enough to overcome the warming that happens during March. The models are showing the -EPO relaxing b/w the 7-10th, that would be the window to watch with a -NAO. Watch the EPO, how negative does it get and when does it rebound. The rebound is the period to watch when there is a -NAO.

I consider NE Texas the entire NE part of the state, from Waco to Lufkin and north to the Red River all the way west to Wichita Falls. Big area. Basically, the NE 1/4 of the state.

Heh, I've put my car in plenty of tough situations (trying to hide behind a random building in Stephenville from extremely cold, dense hail on April 24, 2015 immediately comes to mind), but that thankfully hasn't been one of them. I can't really explain it, but that particular meme just tickles me the right way. : P

Models seem to indicate that DFW will get over 7" and into 2nd place pretty easy but the final push is in question. It will come down to luck, will a HP supercell pass over the airport, will we get some training, or will the airport just miss out on the Feb record?

Wikipedia:

“Northeast Texas is a region in the northeast corner of the U.S. state of Texas. It is geographically centered on two metropolitan areas strung along Interstate 20: Tyler in the west and Longview/Marshall to the east. Mount Pleasant, Sulphur Springs, Paris and Texarkana in the north primarily along Interstate 30, Jacksonville and Palestine to the south are also major cities within the region. Most of Northeast Texas is included in the inter-state region of the Arklatex.”

And...

“According to the Northeast Texas Genealogical Society, the following 23 counties comprise Northeast Texas: Anderson, Bowie, Camp, Cass, Cherokee, Delta, Franklin, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Hopkins, Lamar, Marion, Morris, Panola, Rains, Red River, Rusk, Smith, Titus, Upshur, Van Zandt, Wood”

Yep, those especially the latter is what is typically called Northeast Texas. East Texas is Northeast Texas plus Deep East Texas. Deep East Texas is centered around Lufkin including Center, Nacogdoches, Jasper etc.

The differences in culture, flora and climate are vast between Wichita Falls and Lufkin are vast. That is like comparing Kansas to Alabama.

You sure know how to rile us geographers up.

Comparing WFalls to Longview/Marshall area is like comparing plain white toast to champagne soaked collard greens spritzed with jalapeño juice

Nearly 6 inches of rain fell at DFW Airport last week, pushing the monthly total to 6.55". Another 0.01" has fallen so far today (through 8 am). This is the 3rd wettest February for Dallas/Fort Worth out of 120 years of records. The winter currently ranks as 8th wettest.
