Low 70s down here in Houston this morning. Looks like I got about a quarter inch of rain overnight. Quite a bit colder behind the front, which is south of Huntsville now (51 there). Quite chilly in the Panhandle (mid-teens). GFS keeps the cold air north of central Houston. WRF & NAM bring the cold air through this afternoon with temps dropping into the 50s. I think the GFS is wrong. Still lots of heavy rain west of Austin, perhaps you'll get more rain there today.

Depends on how far the freeze line gets, and how long it stays at or below 32. What I'm surprised at is that Tarrant Co hasn't been aded to the WWA as reports of FRZ rain have come in from both west and north Tarrant.

Mesoscale Discussion 0079
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0757 AM CST Wed Feb 21 2018

Areas affected...West-central/North Texas into southern Oklahoma

Concerning...Winter mixed precipitation

Valid 211357Z - 211800Z

SUMMARY...Winter mixed precipitation mainly in the form of sleet and
bouts of freezing rain will continue to expand generally
northeastward across the Texas Low Rolling Plains and Big Country
into southern Oklahoma through the morning.

DISCUSSION...Scattered showers and some thunderstorms have increased
early this morning especially across the Low Rolling Plains of
west-central into western North Texas. An increasing
northeastward-spreading zone of ascent atop the cold side of a
southeastward-advancing strong cold front will likely to support
some additional increase in northeastward-spreading precipitation
through the morning. A mix of sleet and freezing rain is likely
across the region as ample warm air aloft supports partial if not
full full meting atop an approximately 1 km deep near-ground cold
layer. Freezing rain should be most common as the predominant
precip-type especially in areas just behind the surface front
(roughly within 50-75 miles), with sleet more common in areas
farther north and/or associated with the thunderstorm-producing
convective elements.

Watch the temps this afternoon as next heavy precip batch comes in. Temps are key here.

Abilene is very serious this morning. I'm not sure why Wichita Falls is not under a warning. Qpf is overperforming out west

Ft Worth Alliance is reporting 32 and Grapevine is reporting 32, so Tarrant county could probably be added to the WWA. Also, numerous locations in Collin County are now at or below freezing.

I thought temps were to remain where they are throughout the day (i.e. if you are above 32 now, you will stay there).

Is there some reason why they should drop if the front has stalled and we have warm air aloft?

I'm getting dejavu of late Feb 2015. We had near miss ice storms and heavy rains before the surprise snow storms in a similar -PNA pattern final week of Feb and early March

What a great drought buster. All this rain is draining directly into the lakes... dormant vegetation.

I’ve never seen sights quite like this morning. Trees bent over and covered in ice and creeks and ponds roaring over their banks!

There's a great big warm nose aloft over DFW and extending all the way north to the Red River. With such shallow cold air across NE TX, I don't see that warm nose eroding. That means very cold rain/freezing rain and possibly a few sleet pellets. Freezing rain looks more likely than sleet, given the shallow sub-freezing air at the surface. Snow does not appear to be a possibility in the DFW area. Could be quite a significant ice storm.

That front just arrived in NW Harris County. My temperature is down to 60F now and falling.
