This is turning out to be the most snow many have seen in these areas as BigB0882 mentioned above. Parts of MS are nearing half a foot at this hour.

From NWS Jackson, MS twitter

I would not be surprised if there was an 8"+ total somewhere when done

It is still snowing and snowing hard! We have to have at least 3 inches at my house. I have seen many pics and reports of surrounding areas that have closer to 5.

Well, congrats to all in South Texas, Southern Louisiana, South and Central Mississippi, and North Central Alabama for enjoying quite a surprise and memorable snow event across the Deep South just over 2 weeks from the arrival of Christmas. Most areas to this juncture have reported 1-3 inches. However there have been spots ranging from 3- 5 inches in the aforementioned areas. The Jackson, MS NWS WFO reported areas just outside of Jackson, MS has received about over 6 inches of snowfall!! Wow!! Very impressive event, and one which was forecasted fabulously by the NAM model days in advance!! NAM has been spot on with its snowfall projections in previous runs going back the past 72 hours which showed upwards to 5 nches in parts of South Texas, and then 5+ inches in areas from LA and MS.

It also helped that the frontal Low which organized in the Western GOM earlier today ended up being a bit stronger (now at 1008 mb) than what the NAM and GFS had depicted from the past couple of days. The GOM system really helped to bring that colder air aloft all the way to the coast.

Again, I am sure most of you enjoyed this snow event , very rare indeed, especially with the snow amounts that have accumulated. We wait to see if we will get another Deep South surprise later this season. Mother Nature can throw us curveballs every now and then 8-)

Huge and chunky snow flakes coming down in NW ATL suburbs. Expected to continue all night.

No snow here in central North Carolina. Just light sleet here.

We're in and out of various precipitation here, light rain at the moment but it seems like the heavier it is the more frozen--we had sleet earlier and the yellows on the radar were generally snow. Some non-uniform accumulation is happening as well on grass and roofs.

I think we should also give props to the Canadian. The crazy uncle got this one right. It may have been the first model to show the storm, it runs out further than the NAM doesn't it?

I live 60 miles SW of New Orleans. It snowed all day. Around lunch it was so heavy that we had near white out conditions. I think this was even more than we had Christmas Day 2004. That is the last time Thibodaux had accumulating snow.

It had been rain mixed with sleet here for most of the day until about 1 1/2 hours ago, and then it was all snow. Huge flakes that have covered the ground. I already have about 2 inches on my car and 1/2 inch on the ground and it's still coming down heavily. It was worth the wait. This storm was amazing.

There is one last band of moisture moving out of the Gulf and pushing onshore Mobile Bay northeastward through SW Alabama, then up through Montgomery, and then up onto metro Atlanta area. This band will gradually changeover to all snow overnight or what is left of it.

Ivanhater, there may be just enough moisture on the tail end of that band to give Pensacola, Crestview and Defuniak Springs possibly a dusting of snow during the wee hours of Saturday morning before the precip moves out for good..

It has been an impressive Deep South winter storm to follow these past 24 hours for sure!

See there Jag, good things come to those who wait patiently. Remember what I told you last night. I am happy that Mobile got to see some snow with this storm.

Yeah, I'm a believer again! That was one long dry spell, even for here. Watching that snow line all day was agonizing.

Seems as though this band slowed down when it got here. It's still snowing pretty good out there. Love it. Hope P'cola gets in on the fun.

Ivan, looking at radar the leaning edge of that band should be moving over Pensacola about now. There will likely be sleet falling first, then the changeover to snow. BTW, Jag was correct in that it does seem to me the precip band has slowed its progression just a bit and actually precip expanded just a bit as well. It is about a 60 mile wide ban from west to east.

Montgomery reporting light snow this hour. This last precip band is hanging back on its tail end and the precipitation shield has slightly expanded as the area moves into South Alabama. They could possibly get 1-3 inch snowfall accumulations overnight in Southeast and South Central Alabama.

I thought I had a couple of good ones but they're too dark. It's nothing compared to what happened to the north and west of here, but we did end up with about an inch on the ground and probably 2 or 3 on colder surfaces. It's starting to lighten up now, but still snowing.

Light snow reported.across the Florida Panhandle early this morning in Pensacola, Milton, Destin and Crestview. Drier air working in very quickly and the snow will be coming to an end right at about sunrise .
