So, back out of lurking mode to post some pics of our snow in East Texas. I moved a bit south of Longview to Lake Cherokee in northern Rusk County a few years ago. Here are some pics yesterday evening and this morning. The last one is in southern Rusk County near Mt. Enterprise. We had about 4" at our house on the lake with 6-8" down in the southern part of the county. You can tell that the pine trees were really weighted down with the snow. Sorry for the delay, but we just go power back on from the storm.

Amazing pics. I'm near Tyler and it was pretty but nothing like that. I plan to put together a statewide snowfall map tomorrow. Sounds like there was a swath generally from Palestine to Marshall where 6 to 9" fell. That swath I believe stretches west all the way to around Hobbs, New Mexico.

I noticed a little bowling ball west of El Paso rolling in. Any shot at Freezing Drizzle tonight? Especially with all the wrecks around Austin this AM!

I was thinking, I can't remember freezing fog in the forecast either. It's usually a more northern latitude thing.

We definitely have freezing fog at my house now! 29 degrees.

Amazing pics. I'm near Tyler and it was pretty but nothing like that. I plan to put together a statewide snowfall map tomorrow. Sounds like there was a swath generally from Palestine to Marshall where 6 to 9" fell. That swath I believe stretches west all the way to around Hobbs, New Mexico.

I would like to see that snowfall map, with Louisiana included. On my way back from Longview to south Louisiana yesterday morning, I stopped in Natchitoches La. I was amazed that at 9:30 light snow was still falling, big fat flakes, was beautiful.

There was more snow in the ground there, probably 5 to 6 inches.

As I drove south on I49, the accumulation finally completely disappeared just south of Alexandria.

Honestly as much as I kinda discount the icon. I did pretty well on the track of last weekend.

^^^ and I have no real reason to discount the Icon haha

I do have to give it credit. I’m not usually very impressed by its performance, and I definitely discounted it, but it was one of the first to lock onto the southern track consistently.

Looking over the historical archived model runs for last weekends storm...it didn't even have the storm until inside 5 days, really slow to pick it up compared to the other Globals but did a decent job inside 48 hrs.

Here's the ICON's forecast from 5 days out during the peak of the storm system...the storm is non-existent. It might be decently reliable in the short range but it appears below average in the medium to long term. I think these kind of learnings can be beneficial for all of us "model watchers" during our future discussions.

UKMET has something similar and there is some support from the Euro EPS & GEFS. Would want to see something out of the GFS or Euro over the next day or so before getting overly interested. GFS also had something on some of the weekend runs but dropped it. Maybe it brings it back? The old show it in the longer range, lose it in the medium range and then finally bring it back in the shorter range?

The last storm had support from all the models, so it's not great news that not many show anything else in the pipeline. I'm worried that once we get colder it will shunt all the storms to the east coast, and our one (two) shots will be over for DFW.

I would like another shot before the big cold drops down.

It's great what this winter has brought so far, just want to see it in my backyard. We moved to this house in 2015, and it hasn't been covered in snow once. It needs to be christened properly. Honestly, we would just drive to Abilene and visit my wife's family in a normal year and see their snow, but not doing so right now due to COVID.

After our big winter event on Sunday, I thought I would post this video as yesterday was the "anniversary" of the two day record snowfall that hit parts of South Central Texas including shattering all records at San Antonio when 13.5 inches (officially)fell literally shutting down the city for several days back in January of 1985. It was truly an amazing event that I will never forget and is what largely got me interested in studying the weather. Little did I know then as a child that snow (particularly that kind of an event) was not something that occurred in places like San Antonio very often. I quickly learned to appreciate the wonderful surprises that mother nature can bring.

Btw...this event happened during a La Nina (weak). Often most of our winter events occur during El Nino cycles, however in 1985 San Antonio saw 2 snowfall events in January.

I quickly learned to appreciate the wonderful surprises that mother nature can bring.

My family and I moved from San Antonio to DFW in the summer of 1984 and I remember being upset that San Antonio got all that snow and DFW didn't, although January and February 1985 were cold and snowy at times for the Metroplex. The one and only winter event while living in SA was January 1982 when a quick burst of snow started falling one day in 2nd grade. My teacher Mrs. Evans let all the kids out to play in the snow. It melted before school was out. I was a snow junkie even as a young kid!! Not much has changed, especially the kid part.

yeah I'm concerned about the same thing, I really feel the metro wasted the first two storms. I mean they were so great and so close, they were the perfect storms and yet again the metro can't cash in. I still can't get this thought out of my head that it always goes around the metro, I mean look at the accumulation maps from Sunday.... and I'm also in the same boat on where I live since 2015, I've never seen more than a light dusting in the yard

but for me personally it's been a pretty amazing start only because I've chased twice now tbh(I never thought I'd chase twice by now but it just felt right to do it and lined up with work which is usually my issue and I've seen more snow just from driving locally than I have on vacations lol), don't get me wrong ski resort snow is nice but there's something about watching it fall that I love more. Obviously it would have been better in the metro, but I really want one in DFW just to cap things off and for some of my friends and people in this thread

With the NWS confirming the numerous 6" totals across Williamson County (Northern Austin Metro), it is the first time that county has seen that much snow since 1944.

I got nothing from that storm because of the dryness, but I got a lucky surprise December 29th, 2020.

So far this winter, temps have been about average. No real torchy days save maybe one or two. Each mini warm up is followed by a cool or cold front keeping a pleasant winter feel so far. And the winter storms so far have been impressive although not for DFW. But what I am in the mood for is a major arctic dump. I want some serious cold. I'm talking about a true blue norther direct from mother Russia with nasty wind chills cold enough to make my wife want to pack up and move to Mexico(she hates cold weather, I don't want her to move). Temps in the teens and twenties for a few days with a nice snow that sticks around more than a day would be ideal. Not yet "half" over, this season could have a few more surprises.

The High Pressure zones up at Alaska, Canada, & Greenland could cause a Arctic invasion here by February even though it's very far out.



Also, 2 Meter Temperature is showing a extremely cold air mass coming into Alaska from Russia towards the end of January, could come down in the next few weeks after moving into Alaska, it's a wait & see for this potental Polar Plunge.

This one snowstorm, 36 years ago, is the reason I became curious and interested in weather. i got to experience it as a kid. It was such a peaceful, magical day in San Antonio.
