This El Nino had a couple of subsets and hindsight is always 20/20. First it was a cold pdo El Nino, however not like the normal cold PDO. The raging warm waters off Japan is what drove -PDO, rather than really cold waters off North America. It had Nina warmth tendencies. At the same time Canada was devoid of cold like typical Super El Ninos, we had the worst of both worlds.

Well, it’s 11:00 p.m. on February 29, 2024. Definitely a disappointment this winter season for a middle aged guy who loves cold and snow. Beyond a January dusting, hardly saw a snowflake this winter and there was no real significant accumulation.

At my age, you wonder how many more times you’ll get to see a real snowstorm. But then again, I’m glad to be alive and able to enjoy whatever weather we get here along the Red River. It’s in the 30’s outside right now and I think I’ll go out on the back deck and enjoy the chill for a few minutes as Leap Day ends. Probably the coldest night we’ll have until next fall or winter.

After a winter that wasn’t, I’ll see everyone in the Spring thread. So long Texas Winter 2023-24, we hardly knew you!

This winter was a massive bust, such a major disappointment, and this spring is looking very disappointing for the state

Similar thing for DFW. 2024 is 0.1*F warmer than 1930 (4th) with an average of 57.7*F, but cooler than 2017 (1st) and 1976 (2nd).

Of course models and ensembles want to bring back a high latitude blocking pattern in the middle of march, where the heck was that in february? Smh, wont me much since its mid march, but maybe some cooler weather hopefully

2023-2024 winter had a very weak Aleutian low. All the other good El Ninos had lower heights across the northern Pacific from Japan to the Aleutians. This one was nearly the opposite.



Also the lower heights (anomaly) were all generally very weak across the NHEM.

From what I understand, ridging north of Hawaii isn't good during winter but troughing is. A -pdo is interesting in an niño, which we had this past winter. Don't happen very often. I'm surprised January was below avg. Guess we got the right timing then. If we get a strong niña and it's central based with another -pdo, maybe be another long winter next year. Typically most niñas are front loaded but may not matter if it is robust

February was a complete bust. Ironically, we may have a cool Spring Break. This weekend looks nice.

Man the GFS makes me furious, of course midels try to bring back a blocking pattern over alaska and greenland for mid march, where the heck was this pattern in february?? Really unfortunate timing

Niño was too strong this winter and east based. Lucky to get cold in January. Niño is weakening dramatically and we will see a colder pattern evolve but for most too late in season

Winter may make one final appearance just after spring break, models agree on a couple of pretty strong fronts ( for march standards) CPC has us highlighted below average weather in 8-14 day outlook, i look forward to some cooler temps, highs in the 50’s and 60’s looks like a solid bet
