Reminds me of the “inland hurricane” in Kansas in 1991 as a kid. Widespread 100+ winds took down grain silos and did lots of damage. But with a less populated region.

Geez.

Texas Spring 2024

The TV news footage around the city was crazy. Downtown got hit hard. Glass everywhere. Storefronts and restaurants completely blown-out. It looks like after Ike downtown and across a good chunk of the city. Caught a lot of the city by surprise. While all this was going on, the Astros played at Minute Maid and there was a concert at the Toyota Center downtown that went on. No power loss at those facilities but a lot of fans couldn’t get to those events (or were in for a surprise later trying to get home). Several school districts are closed and the mayor has asked anyone besides emergency personnel to stay at home.

It wasn’t quite as bad up here in Montgomery County. The power flickered a few times and some limbs/branches down, but in my neighborhood it was nothing like the storm from a couple of weeks ago. There are several blue tarps in the neighborhood from that one.

A shot of it coming in…

That was the worst storm I've ever experienced. Estimated wind gusts near 80 mph at my house and I missed the strongest winds which passed to my south. Unbelievable wind gusts. No power here and I'm afraid it will be a while. Thankfully no major damage, but unfortunately my neighbors weren't as lucky.

Yeah I had just commented on Wx Infinity that these storms this evening kinda reminded me of the May 20, 1983 storm system that blew through Southeast TX causing widespread damage with significant impacts across the Houston Metro area (minus the numerous tornadoes reported back then).

This is me being pedantic of course, but it should go without saying the extremely saturated ground from excessive rainfall this Spring (this has been one of the rainiest starts to the year in Houston's history) definitely made the extent of the damage worse than it might have been with all of the large trees and power lines that were easily uprooted.

Death toll is now 7 and still over 500k w/o power. I've been through several hurricanes in my 70 years living on or near the Gulf coast and yesterday rivaled anything I've seen in them. I've seen no estimates of damage in Houston metro, but several billion dollars would not surprise me. Multiple houses under construction in our subdivision collapsed. Winds at my house were sustained at 60+mph with gusts probably to 100mph but since my station was damaged I don't know for sure. Confirmed tornado was very close to our house. To say the least it was very scary as we listened to large debris hitting the house while we hunkered down. Fortunately our worst damage was fence damage. We fared a lot better than many and a lot better than I thought we were going to listening to the roar(yes some sounded like a train, but wasn't continuous).

It was a crawl with dewpoints in the upper 60s and some SCT CU, but as of 4pm, DFW is at 90*F officially.

That's the 5th day this year to-date.

Decent signal from CPC for South Central Texas on the back end of May into early June. My faith in climatology as mentioned a few days ago hopefully pays off. We need this stretch to deliver. Still counting on some tropical impacts during the summer (hopefully not hurricanes) but it would be nice to get a few days of non-severe storms across the region before we get into all that.

txtwister78 yup, the GFS has been showing more disturbances moving across the state next week and beyond at least keeping the chance of rain around for even longer, hopefully areas that got hit so hard get a break from the rain though, central and south texas can definitely use it the most

Could be some interesting severe weather days coming up next week. Could be some capping concerns though

I am in no way a professional. Take what I say with a grain of salt as I could be totally wrong. Please refer to the NHC, NWS, or SPC for official information.
