It is so sad. I do not even want to look at it. Depressing. Sheesh.

If there were a D5, I wonder how much of Texas would be in it.

That does bring up an interesting point. With this becoming a historic droought, I wonder if a new category will be formed? Things are happening that most have never seen and hope to never see again.

We had a drought 2 years ago, and I've seen some other droughts before here. But this is the first one that's not only yellowed the weeds - it's killed some of them right off. Parts of our yard have deep cracks which has happened before. But what hasn't happened before is the patches of grass/weeds completely gone and just dry dirt left.

I think this image pretty much says it all about Texas and the drought.

Given the recent rains this week, parts of Texas ought to show improvement on next week's map. :)

As seen on cnn.com in an article about the rain

Nearly all of the state is classified as being in an "exceptional" or "extreme" drought by the U.S. Drought Monitor. "Texas conditions continue to deteriorate what little they can from abysmal," that group said in an update this week.

NOAA's drought monitor predicts drought conditions in Texas will "persist or intensify" between now and December.

Climate scientists, meanwhile, say the extreme heat seen this summer in Texas could become more of a norm. Droughts may also become more intense as the atmosphere warms.

"As temperatures continue to rise, these droughts will become hotter," said John Nielsen-Gammon, the Texas state climatologist, "and what would have been an adequate amount of precipitation in the past might not be quite as adequate in the future."

It scares me. I think it will take years for our state to recover from this drought, which we all know hasn't even ended yet.

Getting sick and tired of this drought. I have a bad feeling once this droughts is over, it could be the costliest on record for all the affected areas including Texas. It is interesting to note this drought started when the recession started.

Hmmm, this image looks very familiar. Almost like it hasn't been updated at all.

I think with the rain we had last week, it should be showing at least a little bit of improvement. It looks like the only thing that changed across the entire state was some slight improvement immediately along the Red River in northeast Texas.

The map has been updated, looks like the drought isn't "exceptional" in a few places now, just "Extreme".

I hope we keep seeing more of that dark red color turn lighter. I'm glad that some rain is finally creeping into the state.
