Today went full outbreak mode... 38 tornado reports so far, all of them in Iowa.

Oh yeah there's also a severe warning in *checks notes* Alaska. Yes... Alaska. Now that's not something you see every day

Like a severe thunderstorm warning in Alaska?

Yes, there was at least 30 confirmed tornadoes in the past few days in the Northern Plains.

Welp I was out playing some golf with relatives today and we got BLASTED by a gust front with 60mph gusts right in the middle of the round  NWS wasn't kidding with the severe warning.

Needless to say we had to quit. I needed this during peak season, not when there's a 10% chance of showers lol

That was fun I was out doordashing and saw it moving in and was like oh really. I ended up doing a delivery in NE Jenks near the toll road and hit a shower came back NW towards Oral Roberts and no rain but it still felt way better after that

Yeah the last two July's have really come in clutch. We've had more storm events in July 2020 and 2021 than we did in May 2020 and 2021. That's pretty crazy. Maybe 2022 will produce some solid peak season events (hopefully no big tor outbreaks of course)

PDS Severe Thunderstorm watch for that area, it’s going to be a long night for them for sure . . .

I know someone living up there . . .

Well the severe wind event is missing me to the east. My phone kept going off for a tornado warning and I heard the sirens once, but I doubt I received a gust over 35mph. Much more of a heavy rain with no wind event for me.

Storm complex is moving into the Chicago area though with some pretty impressive velocity returns, people living on higher levels in apartment buildings might be in for a thrill.

Starting today (8/2), there is a new severe thunderstorm warning system, including WEA activation for extreme storms. This was supposed to start back in April but for some reason it got postponed until now. This NWS article does a good job explaining everything.

Personally I think this is a great change. I know the general public who don't follow the weather like us on here usually don't really care about severe warnings like they should, so hopefully this will help them really understand the dangers these storms can cause, especially those that fall under the "destructive" category (80+mph winds or 2.75in+ hail). I'm excited for this and hopefully it goes well.

There appears to have been a significant and maybe even violent tornado in WI today. Debris ball nearly 2 miles wide and debris lofted to 20k+ feet, which is usually in the EF3/4 range. Hopefully that was just trees and not buildings.

Well we had a pretty decent tornado event in northern Illinois today. I didn't get anything more than a downpour, not even a flash of lightning, but the tornado sirens went off several times over the course of about an hour. There's video of some significant tornado action to my south though.

I'm in a 30% hatched for wind for tomorrow (well, it's 12:06am central right now, so technically today), and it's the 1 year anniversary of the Iowa/Illinois derecho of '20, so it seems a fitting way to celebrate. I probably received a 70mph gust at most during last year's event, so we'll see if tomorrow(today) serves up something stronger.

There was a PDS Severe Thunderstorm Warning for 80 mph wind gusts in NW Oklahoma on a Marginal risk day (Today), this is why I don't take low-risk days for granted . . .
