South Carolina May Have New All-Time Record High

Pending verification, Friday will go down in history as the hottest day ever for South Carolina.

Temperatures soared to 113 degrees on Friday at the reporting stations in the town of Johnston and the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

These temperatures on paper have surpassed the state's previous all-time record high of 111 degrees, which was set in Camden on June 28, 1954.

However, National Weather Service meteorologists and the South Carolina Climate Office must first verify that the temperature readings are accurate--a task scheduled to be completed Monday.

96F June 30 was a record high here as well.

June 29 missed the record high by one degree breaking our 7 days in a row streak of record highs.

June 2012 had 13 record highs and was the hottest June on record. The average daily max this month of 88.2 degrees also hotter than any average daily max for a month in August, which is normally significantly hotter than June. (An interesting side note is that we actually had an above nomal figure for mornings below freezing, but this was only because is has been so dry with no humidity that some of the nights have been cool).

There are no changes in sight. Today is forecasted to break the current record high by 2 degrees.
