My uncle and aunt have a ranch outside of the town of Llano as well as a lake house on LBJ. Their lake house property is under water, luckily their house is up on a hill and is okay, however they probably lost their dock. Their main home is at the ranch wich has had more than a foot of rain. Whole sections of their close to 50 acres are under water.

People need to stay away from the river through the Downtown area. There are sections where the water is going out of the banks and covering the trail. Saw a video a few min ago, the Colorado has turned into a raging river through Austin.

Lake Travis, the main flood control structure on the Colorado River, is doing exactly as it was designed to do: prevent a large floodwave from moving downstream. Unfortunately, people have built within the lake's floodpool, but stopping these floods is the lake's purpose. The four floodgates open are helping to pass the water along without causing flooding downstream, and I think LCRA has only gone above 4 floodgates open with Mansfield Dam once (in 1957 with six).

As for Lake Buchanan, I don't know if all the floodgates have ever been open, but I do know the lake passed extensive water downstream in both 1938 and 1991 with quite a bit of floodgate operation.

Most recent LCRA update:
Flood operations at Buchanan Dam will start tonight or early tomorrow. Take action to protect people and property. Flood operations will start after the peak of the Llano River flood begins to pass Wirtz Dam. This is anticipated to occur overnight on Oct. 16-17. However, the start of gate operations will be determined based on actual conditions downstream on lakes LBJ and Marble Falls. Lake Buchanan is forecast to rise to 1,018 to 1,020 feet msl and then be gradually drawn by flood releases to 1,018 feet msl over the following day or two.

It's already over 1018.

Summary Last Update: Oct 16 2018 10:23PM

Flood operations at Buchanan Dam began at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16. LCRA plans to open one floodgate an hour for four hours, for a total of four floodgates. Take action to protect people and property.

The gates will be opened in this order:
10 p.m.: One gate from the 14-gate section.
11 p.m.: One gate from the 16-gate section.
Midnight: One gate from the 14-gate section.
1 a.m.: One gate from the 16-gate section.

Lake Buchanan is forecast to rise to 1,018 to 1,020 feet msl and then be gradually drawn by flood releases to 1,018 feet msl over the following day or two.

With floodgates open at Lake Buchanan, there will be flood operations underway at each of the dams along the Highland Lakes - Buchanan, Inks, Wirtz, Starcke, Travis, and Tom Miller. Dangerous fast-moving water is flowing through the entire chain of Highland Lakes, and water levels on lakes LBJ, Marble Falls and the upper end of Lake Travis are very high as this dangerous flood is being passed through the lakes. The Llano River destroyed the FM 2900 bridge at Kingsland - where the Llano River enters Lake LBJ - the morning of Oct. 16.

Because of the dangerous conditions on the lakes, LCRA has closed lakes Buchanan, Inks, LBJ, Marble Falls and Travis until further notice.
