Still freezing, but not a hard freeze like forecast.

Is my perception wrong?

Sometimes the urban areas can be a little warmer but not always. Tonight the reason the drop did not happen strongly as forecast because the upper low originally was not suppose to meander and the winds have kept up strong along with cloud cover. Strong winds does a lot of mixing and prevents optimal cooling. So it feels colder actually with wind chills but actual temperatures remain up a bit. For optimal radiational cooling you will need winds less than 10mph and clear skies. When you see winds less than 5mph or calm sometimes the temps even beat the forecast.

Watch the temps the next couple of nights and you will see how those two factors mentioned can seesaw the lows.

Radar echoes are increasing to the west... it looks like the NAM wasn't pulling our leg after all when it hinted at this a couple of days ago.

Who would have thought living in NTX is the worst place to see snow in Texas :double:

I bet this is how South Texas has felt the decades prior when we received most of the snow. I guess it’s our turn to wait

Active weather pattern developing early next week and likely continuing throughout Thanksgiving into the later days of November. In typical weak/moderate El Nino fashion, the Southern Branch of the jet stream looks extremely active with upper level disturbances riding along the Southern tier of the United States and multiple chances of Coastal lows bring rounds of heavy rain and potentially thunderstorms across the Gulf Coast. The last week of November is showing some signs of change in the high latitudes and blocking attempts to develop across the NE Pacific and the Northern Atlantic. If I were looking for a return of much below normal weather, I would monitor the first week or so of December. Interestingly, Northern Hemisphere snow cover is near decadal highs. As the coldest air retreats back to Canada later this week, look for continued stormy/snowy weather to our North and our source Regions.

This wasn’t a great setup for us, so it’s hard to worry about not seeing anything. It should be the first of many opportunities

Thanks.

I just did notice the cloud cover so that makes sense. It’s actually pretty impressive how cold it got with the clouds. Tonight should be very cold.

Ice pellets/sleet mixing with drizzle reported in McAllen and Edinburg in the Rio Grande Valley. Impressive that far South.

My brother sent pics of a few snowflakes on his car in College Station.
Radar showed a very light band over Tyler but I did not see anything reaching the ground.

My wife is in Tyler for work and woke up realizing that she forgot something in her car at 1:00 am. She took a video of it snowing pretty decent at the hotel parking lot.

The hi-res Canadian (RGEM) shows this mornings activity the best of all models and it keeps flurries around the eastern half of Texas into tomorrow morning.

In talking about how impressive this mid November cold snap is for south central Texas, NWSFO Austin/San Antonio yesterday remarked how it is rare for their CWA (county warning area) to be covered in two consecutive nights of Freeze Warnings. Usually it takes multiple events for that to happen. Should the freezing temps verify tomorrow morning, it will all have been accomplished in two nights and one event.

You guys (Ntxw, orangeblood, srainhoutx) have piqued my interest about early December. I did see some stuff on Twitter this morning about how incredibly strong the -NAO and Greenland blocking looks to set up later this month. As long as the Pacific gets the memo, many of us might enjoy a December "surprise!" :cheesy:

Woke up this morning to a dusting of snow on the ground, roof tops, and cars. Ironically, the same thing happened on November 13th of 1976.
