206 hail reports and 36 wind reports so far... There's going to be some big numbers when this event is over

Storm reports for 4/9: 104 wind reports and 255 hail reports. No tornado reports right now but I know there was at least 1 confirmed tornado in MS and there were probably some QLCS spin ups throughout the day as well.

Some massive hail got reported as the line blew through southern MS/AL/FL panhandle. In addition, the Palmetto tornado got a preliminary rating of EF3/140 mph. Haven't seen a rating for the Pelahatchie tornado yet.

One report in Alabama was 4 inch Hail! Very close to the size of Softballs!

Enhanced risk added for parts of Florida. The peninsula doesn't see that all that often. Severe watch already up for that area

Once this system moves off the coast, it looks like another lull is coming up through this week.

Slight risk in Texas today . . .

Risks

  • Up to Baseball or Tennis ball sized Hail
  • Up to 65-70 mph wind gusts
  • Tornado threat appears to be Zero, but I don't want to take any chances . . .

Well today is the one year anniversary of the third-largest number of tornadoes recorded in a single 24 hour event in history, behind only the two Super Outbreaks. This event produced several violent tornadoes, including one that was almost certainly EF5 strength at one point (Bassfield). Another crazy aspect of that event is that the squall line produced multiple strong QLCS tornadoes in SC, including a violent EF4 which is absolutely crazy from a squall line. Certainly an event that won't be forgotten for a long time... Hard to believe it's been a year already.

Fortunately this year's 4/12 looks a lot different, although there could be some isolated very large hail in parts of TX. After today, it looks to be very quiet for at least the next week, with cool and rainy conditions over the Plains... This will make it 4 straight years with a cold shot in April, although this one isn't anything close to the cold shots in 2018 and 2020. Despite the cold shots, the last 2 years have gone on to produce major events at the end of the month here (4/30/19 and 4/28/20). There should be roughly a third of the month remaining after the cool shot so odds are we end up with at least something towards the end of the month.

Now hold on there I think it's a bit early to call it a dud considering we are not even halfway through the month yet  After the cool shot we should still have about a third of the month left to get something...

Rotation is gone. Now some very intense straightline winds in its place.

Agreed, GFS looks like an active last week of April for the southern plains

Looking way down the road we need to keep an eye on the WPAC TC and see if it does a full recurve. If it does it could have an influence on the U.S weather pattern and create a favorable setup for severe weather.
