Wow...what a day! I was hoping to have the cart open at least through the morning...not! Hard rain, respite, harder rain, respite, then OH MAN!!! for 30 or 40 minutes, while my good friend fretted...she and her husband were supposed to fly to Vieques for their anniversary at 2. Hope they got to leave but it has been crazy! Most shops closed and I think we were all in Mamacita's with some Swedes watching the World Cup. Of course the rain was blowing in and we were all freezing but it was fun anyway. Now...calm, no rain, a slight breeze, and the plants in the garden are SINGING! I haven't even looked at the radar yet...

And the manner in which that Cup match ended probably had the Swedes singing too!

It's been pretty quiet here for about 3-4 hours now, haven't even heard thunder. While checking out the airport data, I got interested in what other locations (countires) were available. What I chose to look at made me not mind our weather at all!!

LOL... I'm sure the penguins don't mind it... Amundsen... I think that's the guy who first reached the South Pole. I wonder how many people actually live on that continent. I know it's mostly if not entirely scientists and other researchers/naturalists.

Taken from stormcarib.com:

"Good Morning, Culebra received 3.1 inches of rain in the last 20 hours, with
wind gust of 32mph."

It rained on and off all night, sometimes intensely but only for a minute or so, mainly soft light rain after yesterday's *gully washers*
Right now there is a light breeze, barely rippling the water and not so blue skies, but enough sun for sunglasses! 8-)

In San Juan, the rainfall totals for yesterday and evening was 1.64 inches. This morning gray cloudy skies are the rule as african dust has propagated westward from Africa behind the wave.

* FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR A PORTION OF EASTERN PUERTO RICO...
INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING AREAS...EASTERN INTERIOR...NORTHEAST
AND SOUTHEAST.

* UNTIL 4 PM AST THIS AFTERNOON

* OVERNIGHT...NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS HAVE
MOVED FROM THE LOCAL CARIBBEAN COASTAL WATERS...WESTWARD AND
ACROSS EAST AND SOUTHEAST SECTIONS OF PUERTO RICO...AND INTO THE
EASTERN INTERIOR MOUNTAINS OF CAYEY AND CIDRA. SEVERAL PERIODS
OF HEAVY RAINFALL ACROSS THIS AREA HAS LEFT WATER LEVELS IN
LOCAL CREEKS...STREAMS...AND RIVER SYSTEMS RISING VERY QUICKLY
THIS MORNING...AND HAS PRODUCED MINOR FLOODING OF LOW LYING
AREAS. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL IS EXPECTED ACROSS THIS AREA
THROUGHOUT THE REST OF THE MORNING...AND COULD INDUCE FLASH
FLOODING...RIVER FLOODING...AND MUDSLIDES.

* USGS RIVER LEVEL SENSORS SHOW SEVERAL RIVER SYSTEMS WITH VERY
HIGH WATER LEVELS THIS MORNING...WHICH INCLUDE RIO VALENCIANO IN
JUNCOS...RIO MAUNABO AT LIZAS...AND RIO MARIN NEAR PATILLAS.

ARE IN THE WATCH AREA...CHECK YOUR PREPAREDNESS REQUIREMENTS...
ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE INTERESTS ALONG AREA RIVERS. KEEP
INFORMED...AND BE READY FOR QUICK ACTION IF FLOODING IS OBSERVED
OR IF A FLASH FLOOD WARNING IS ISSUED.

PEOPLE IN THE WATCH AREA SHOULD CONTINUE TO BE AWARE OF THE
POSSIBILITY FOR HEAVY RAINFALL. AVOID LOW LYING AREAS...AND BE
CAREFUL WHEN APPROACHING HIGHWAY DIPS AND UNDERPASSES. THE
HEAVY RAIN COULD ALSO CAUSE MUDSLIDES IN AREAS OF STEEP TERRAIN.

STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO...LOCAL TV...RADIO OR YOUR
CABLE TELEVISION PROVIDER FOR LATER STATEMENTS AND POSSIBLE
WARNINGS.

Heavy rains haved fallen in SE Puerto Rico for the past 6 hours causing some minor flooding at this time. For San Juan scattered showers haved moved thru overnight.Still the wave that passed us has trailing moist air that is causing all of this precipitation. And the approach of another wave by friday will again enhance the rain.

We have no rain here, a fair breeze and brassy skies. It looks like it is all going to come up from the south right into PR, hope everyone stays safe there.
And now...to the beach for some birthday meditation on how fortunate I am to live in such a beautiful place! :bday:

MJ, how was the rest of your birthday??

I'm reporting that all showers have bypassed us, or died before reaching us (within 20 miles), as we are overlaiden all day with gobs of dust. It's not Saharan, either, it's vocanic, as we can smell the sulpher (again) and can see it on surfaces. The visibility hasn't been 5 miles all day.

St. Thomas airport reports 10miles and clear, but there's no way. Maybe with supervision! St. Croix did report haze today, but from wind patterns, I know they didn't have much, like we did.

Any haze in Culebra today?

By the way, did anyone hear about a private plane that went down today? I heard it by the grapevine, with only 1/2 of the coordinate: 19.1N. But I gather it was under SJU air traffic control.

The rest of my birthday was excellent, thank you. Wonderful party, a very good time had by all.

We got a good rain this afternoon, thunder etc. and the rest of the afternoon was hazy (and that was before I fell asleep). It's said that we're in for a big dust wave but I think it no longer matters, dust or ash, everyone has forgotten what it is like to have clear skies.

I dont know if any of the fellow members in the Puerto Rico,Culebra and VI area saw last night but it was a beautiful lightening display show in the Atlantic side.

Well, it doesn't take an invest for us to have some potentially serious weather around here...a wave by any other name may NOT be the same  PR people, Barbara, Gloria...get your cisterns ready and find a good book or three...

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service San Juan PR
1131 PM AST Wednesday Jun 28 2006

Update...the anticipated tropical wave and now located near 61.5 west...
will continue to move west-northwest across the Caribbean waters during the
overnight hours through late Thursday. Moisture trailing behind
this wave is estimated to linger around the local area at least
through Saturday for active weather conditions for the next few
days. Locally heavy rains and isolated to scattered thunderstorm
activity is expected to affect most of the local islands. There is
a good potential for flash flooding over areas with poor drainage
and urban and small streams. Also...mudslides are possible over
saturated terrains. Residents and visitors are urged to remain
cautious along the rivers and streams...and monitor the progress
of this weather conditions over the next few days.

&&

Previous discussion...
discussion...
deep layered low-trough to our north across the open Atlantic this
afternoon is forecast to retrograde to the northwest over the next 48
hours...which will aid in generating more unstable conditions
aloft as well as draw approaching tropical wave moisture and
dynamics northwest into the local area. Approaching "large" tropical
wave is in fact two waves...one tilted south-southwest to north-northeast in the
horizontal...moving across the Lesser Antilles at this hour...and
a second weakening wave along 52/53w at this hour. These two waves
and associated weather will move west-northwest through the east and NE Caribbean
next 48 hours to produce very active weather and potential for
isolated flash flooding and areas of river flooding. Presently it
appears that the east...se...and east interior sections of PR...as well
as St Croix will receive the focus of heavy precipitation beginning early
Thursday through Thursday evening...and then with the second wave
passage largely south of the area...but close enough...Friday
during the day...for a continuation of high rain chances.
Lingering middle level moisture will maintain unstable conditions on
Saturday...with diurnal effects likely to yield strong convection
west and northwest PR. Winds across the area will increase late Thursday
through Friday with and behind first wave...and may yield
sustained winds near 25 knots at highest elevations. Sufficient
southwesterly shear aloft and high surface pressure across the region are
not expected to present favorable atmospheric conditions for this
wave complex to organize significantly...although the pressure
gradient across the region will increase as the surface troughing
to our north moves northwest and allows Atlantic high to build partially into the
area.

What a great lightning show last night to our west. Unfortunately, MJ, looks like it was right over your head! Hope everything OK there!!

We had the narrow line of squalls come through here in the evening, lasted about 30 minutes, and that was it. Right now winds are SE under 10mph, and we have some low clouds (below 1000ft.) dropping sprinkles. It feels like the wave is crossing here now.

Looks like St. Martin probably had a lot of rain overnight, will be interested to see report from msbee!

Here's the Leeward airports, winds overnight were moderate:
St. Martin
Antigua
Guadeloupe
Dominica
Martinique

We've got cloudy, sunny, light breeze, some hard rains last night (I guess I slept through the light show, drat!) and very early this morning, and hearing some thunder now...it looks like North is the fast direction...we'll see what happens. Yes, I'm curious how Msbee is doing as well. Good for weeding, and everything is blooming like mad! If not for the skeeters from hell, it would be just about perfect 8-)
