Watching the dewpoints tonight. Currently they are running in the upper teens just west of Jacksonville over across interior North Florida. This is critical with regards to freezing rain /icing issues as the night progresses. Temps currently in mid 30s here at my home station, 35.2 degrees.

Also, look for precip to build over the Northeastern GOM and move over the region as the upper shortwave traverses over the area. This precip field will bring the first round of wintry precip across the Big Bend area and Suwannee River Valley region. Will watch this closely.

The precipitation shield from the rapidly developing Low Pressure area off the Southeast Florida coast currently.will move quickly north up the Florida East coast as the storm system moves NNE .during the overnight and early wee hours of the morning.

Ntxw wrote:+PNA, cyclogenesis along and off the east coast with a cold source region...and it gets chilly in Florida? You don't say . PNA is such a big player (next to the NAO) for the far southeastern US

Yes it is this winter, and on this occasion right now. The strong +PNA currently ongoing really, really flexed its muscle in helping bringing to our region this impressive cold air outbreak.

It is worth saying again that this proves that although a negative NAO is the ideal teleconnection set up to help drive cold air to Florida, it is not the only sure fire way to deliver significant cold to this region. Well, at least to Northern Florida.

It sure is amazing seeing this potential event unfold, wintry weather in Florida!! The scope is nuts, hard to believe the Weather Channel is still showing its regular night TV programs like strangest weather on Earth...when one of the strangest weather events is about to occur! They ought to be nuts all over it!

I recently moved to central NC from South FL, but still follow this thread and it's so weird to see that we're likely going to be missed by the snow to the south and east!

Hope you get your fair share of the white stuff northjaxpro!!

Just in the last 20 minutes, precip. started in my SAV location in the form of ZR. My temp. was 30.0 just prior to the start. It cooled down to 28.8 within 10 minutes. I was wondering what the precip form would be at the start and now I know.

Good morning Larry. I am traveling here just off I-95 and now I am just south of Brunswick. My hand held thermometer is saying 31.7 degrees. I have been looking at the Wunderground radar and there is a solid area of freezing rain from where I am west/southwest to interior North Florida. I plan to stay here just long enough to get photos of snow later this morning here, driving back to the house by noon or so (early afternoon) Thank goodness for the brief ride back to Jax given these slick conditions.

Freezing rain currently. My car has a sheet of ice all over it. I may not make it there where I attempted to go.

I probably will stay right here around this region given the icing already occuring. I do not want to get far away from the I-95 corridor at this point.

:uarrow: Be very careful! I've been hearing about a number of accidents in the area in which you're located.

Still fairly light but steady freezing rain continuing here. I've seen no sleet or snow. There now is a light glaze on exposed surfaces/leaves, etc. Just heard reports of roads now being closed due to icing. 28.4 here.

So I made it to Savannah last night, they valet guy was like sorry you came up when we are expecting snow and for the the whole city to shut down, he was amazed when I told him that’s the reason we came up, lol. There were actually people checking out at 10 pm last night they didn’t wanted to get on the road this morning.
Looking at the sounding forecast by the models for this area it looks like sleet-freezing rain will be falling this morning mixed in with flurries then it should all change to all snow between 11-12 pm, and last until around 3 pm. I’m expecting 3-6” snow in this area.

12z Jax sounding, as forecasted there’s one heck of a warm nose at around h925, it will be tough to see snow in NE FL until the very end of the precipitation that it then could change as drier air and lower heights move in.

Thanks Larry for the info and Thanks NDG. I should have left a bit earlier . Larry, yeah I saw two cars on overpasses which people apparently lost control of the vehicles due to icing. That led me to get off the next exit , which is U.S. Hwy 17 just off I-95 about 15- 20 miles south of Brunswick. I am about 12 miles inland from the immediate coast, just into where the cold, shallow air is at the surface obviously. The icing conditions are indeed worsening. . So, I guarantee I will use every precaution of course when I make the drive back to the house.

I am stopped here at a McDonald's using my laptop following radar and surface jobs across the region.

SAV for Savannah?
I’m still in my hotel room on a 7th floor, I can’t tell if the roads are frozen from up here in downtown Savannah, from up here they just look wet. I’ll be going down in a few minutes.

Yes. I suspect most sections of nonelevated roads are wet but not yet icy. However, many elevated roads as well as bridges/overpasses are icy and have apparently been closed.

Yeah, I can attest to the dangerous conditions on overpasses and bridges from the cars wrecked on the emergency lane when I passed by there awhile ago.

People are crazy, they are checking out of the hotel early, they are having to wait at least 15 minutes for the thick ice on the windows to melt. I can see on google maps that traffic is almost dead stop, I can the tall bridge from my hotel is dead stopped, I guess they shut it down.
