Re: Florida Weather

Well, finished January on a frosty, cold note, with a light freeze at my weather station early this morning, 32.2 degrees. This is twelveth freeze measured so far this winter at my home weather station, all within the month of January.

Yeah, it was a very cold month indeed here. So, already surpassed the total number of freezes measured here for last winter (Dec'16 - March'17).

Well, I am still watching the time frame in middle of February (2/10-2/17) as a potential time we may see a more significant arctic front approach the Deep South. It is definitely not quite time for us to turn our backs to Old Man Winter here , especially North Florida, just yet folks!

You might get another freeze in jax, but down here just normal to slightly above. Just wind shift fronts with no real cool air. My winter is about over in S. FL.

:uarrow: Yeah, almost over down there. Once we get to the end of February, yeah the threat of real cold weather into South Florida is a very very low probability.

The big time +NAO and near neutral PNA has been protecting central and southern FL from intrusions from the Arctic air up north so far this early in February, the ensembles have been now trending for the PNA not to go that high in the positive territory and now they are also showing the AO to go back up to positive, things are now looking better than last week for at least central FL for an early Spring over the next couple of weeks. Pollen index has been already running pretty high.

It does look like a February blast of cold I feared might happen is becoming unlikely with extended outlooks continuing to depict near normal temps. Pine trees are dumping pollen here and maples are budding.

It looks like we are done with winter so winter cancel in South Florida. We did have two shots of it in December and in early January. I like to get one more but the pattern we are in won't support it.

Could see some minor moderation across the peninsula a bit after Valentine's Day according to the GFS, but for now...

Spring is here, at least through the next 7-10 days or so.

Yeah, not seeing much in the official extended forecast for us, even out to that 5-10 day time frame. I noticed the NAO is forecast to be fairly positive, so yeah, anything we do get is going to be fleeting.

Caribbean high pressure is asserting itself for now, blocking complete frontal passages and causing us to warm up, especially with morning lows. It looks like some areas of South Florida are going to struggle to get much below 70, with high dewpoints.

How rare is it for "cold" air to get to South Florida in March? I seem to recall feeling truly chilly here only once, after the squall line from the 1993 Storm of the Century passed through.

1993 was the only time I could remember it getting cold down here.

It looks and feels like May out here today. There are even a few towering cumulus cloud complexes just to the south trying (and failing) to get their act together....looks like a line of seabreeze convection attempting to form but just not enough juice for that yet.

Had a little backdoor front that skirted in here by mid-afternoon. Temperatures cooler than forecast - forecasted low in Fort Pierce was 56, currently 54.

I didn't think winter would be over in February but I think our days of cold fronts are over.

The positive NAO has reasserred itself for the time being. As NDG mentioned in an earlier post, it is shielding us from the real cold air bottled up into Canada.

Looks as if the PNA, which had been positive most of this winter, has gone into a neutral or possibly slightly negative phase currently. This is also helping to give us a nice reprieve from Old Man Winter as well.

It looks good that no freezes are on the horizon for at least the next. 10 days for North and Central Florida.

South Florida , yeah, winter just may be over now for you all down there, unless we get some rare type of extreme late season change in the pattern or weather anomaly to bring cold way south...for example the March 1993 Superstorm .

Speaking of the aforementioned March 1993 Superstorm, which some of us have mentioned on this page, we are coming up on the 25 year anniversary of this incredible storm next month. Personally, I easily rank it among the top weather events I have covered and experienced in my career.

The Superstorm came so soon on the heels of Andrew, I remember people experiencing a bit of post-traumatic stress at the hurricane force gusts that accompanied that squall line. It also added some insult to injury in South Dade, which was by no means fully recovered just 6-7 months after Andrew.

I definitely think spring sprung for us down here in late January. We seem to be in a very April-May type pattern with easterly flow, rising humidity, passing showers. The soupiness of the air the last several mornings has pretty much knocked me over!

we've gone directly into torch mode. so much for near to slightly above temps let alone a late season cold shot. it was 86 yesterday in Tampa! a record high. and the extended outlooks continue to depict a persistent torch. thank goodness its only feb or we would be in meltdown mode already.

I think it’s safe to say winter is over. At least for the peninsula that is. Winter cancel!

With dew point values jumping into the upper 60’s to near 70 over the past few days and the strong Easterly to Southeasterly flow thanks to a stubbornly strong SW Atlantic Ridge/Bermuda High it feels like mid-late April at least!

To be honest I’m enjoying this weather for once. Likely due to the fact that it’s mid-February and not the middle of summer meaning the sun angle is still premature in the sky. Our 6-8 week blast of winter in December and January was enjoyed and impressive nonetheless.

With the persistent easterly flow it’s no surprise to see record highs being set along the Florida west coast. Outside of December and January this pattern has been the normal for quite some time, explains why there were so much land impact this past hurricane season.

I would not rule out a blast of cold air in March Joe Bastardi has been hinting about a build-up of arctic air after this warm period.
I don't want to see it but we are not out of the woods as far as way below normal temps yet.
