It was a nice little chilly snap down here, nothing too damaging or anything along the lines of 1/2010 or 12/2010. Question is, do we get more, or was that "it?" NWS Miami mentions a trough edging down later in the week, but also a building Carib. ridge...wouldn't seem to argue for too much cold air really slamming down the peninsula.

That sun felt mighty strong out there this weekend. Cool-ish mornings turning into warm beach days, not the worst January weather one could imagine.

Amen. MOre warm beach days would be real nice. The closer we get to the end of Feb, the closer we get to the end of any real serious cold. It just looks chilly later this week, nothing serious. :P

Looks as if the temps should get at or just below the freezing mark by sunrise tomorrow morning at my north Jax location. Currently 41.3 degrees. High cirrus cloud deck associated with a weak shortwave moving across the SE US are currently keeping temps up across NE FL. However, skies will clear later during the predawn hours. A nice cool weekend in store with highs mid-upper 50s tomorrow and lower 60s on Sunday. Should see another light inland freeze here on Sunday morning.

My thermometer currently reading 31 degrees at 7:15 a.m., making this only the fifth freeze of this La Nina winter season. It may drop another degree or two in the next hour. Looks as if the freeze line is extending down to Ocala, where they are reporting 32 degrees at 7 a.m. and Brooksville, which is at 30 degrees. The chilliest readings observed looking at the NWS obs at 7 a.m. were the usual spots in the panhandle and big bend regions with their cold air drainage: Crestview at 22 and the Tallahassee airport, reporting 25 degrees.

41F here this morning appx 50 mins S and W of Brooksville on the Gulf coast (I live about a mile inland). It was 44F at wakeup which was 6am and fell 3 degrees by sunrise as it had cleared. Has not made it above 55F yet. Deck of high cirrus is blocking out the sun. If it clears tonight, it will be COLD, perhaps even a light frost. But the forecast after this is for a week of warming and 70's by Mon thru Thur. I hate this kind of cold...and it is breezy, too, making it feel even colder. :grr:

FLORIDA ROUND UP Sat Jan 14 2012

The lowest temperture in the state this morning was 20F at Crestview...other notably cold temps were Tallahassee 23F, Apalachicola 27F, Panama City 27F, Jacksonville 29F, Gainesville 29F.

Highs weren't very high at all by Florida standards.... the highest reported temp was 68F at Marathon Airport in the Keys, and 68F at Key West ( occurred after 1am), it was 67F for the daytime high at Key West.
Temperatures were generally in the 50s across the Northern and Central part of the state...and 60s for highs in the Southern portion. Crestview did top 60F and was the warm spot in the state's north.

No records were set today despite the chill. *as cold as Crestview was, the unofficial record for Jan 14 is 16F set just 1 year ago

What a bust by MOS guidance for this morning as many locations in central FL that the MOS showed only upper 30s for lows dropped to the mid 30s in some cases low 30s with widespread frost. Even upper 20s in the usual colder spots.

Did anyone get to experience that "wake low" wind event they had in the Keys Wednesday? Sounded interesting.

Now past mid-January - unless the NAO really goes in the tank, South Florida "winter" is over. I think that one little cold snap near the beginning of the month was pretty much it. Climo says January is our coldest month, with the bulk of the chill weighted toward the beginning of the month, not the end.

Yesterday was a cool, seabreeze event here in New Port Richey. The GOM has fallen to 59F off Anclote Key, which is just to my S and W. So, the morning began at 36F and rose quickly to 63F by 1115am, and basically stayed there the remainder of the day wavering only a degree or two as a brisk NW breeze kept control. Therefore, the high was only 64F but it fell to 61F at 4pm and was 49F by 10pm as winds calmed down. Crystal clear, blue skies but oh that wind! I hope today the wind has less effect. Currently 41.5F at 6am. BTW I found it amusing that Sun morning Tampa was 3 degrees WARMER than St Pete. They really gotta fix that thermometer. Brandon hit 33F with light frost and Tampa was a remarkable TEN DEGREES warmer? C;mon.
We still have weeks and weeks left to winter.

I doubt is the thermometer in Tampa, is the classic city heat island effect.

Wow, classic set up this morning of wide temperature range between many locations in the east coast of FL to the west coast of FL with the winds turning from the east on the Peninsula.
St. Augustine is warmer than Naples!
And some locations on the immediate coast like the Ft Lauderdale airport rose to the 70s before sunrise, a whopping 25 degrees warmer than parts of SW FL.

We had a couple of mornings with frost. One was a doozy - it was really crunchy, which thrilled the puppers. NOT.

So much for the prediction of today's front not making it this far south. Radar check says we got some good rain at home. Hope that is true!

Oddly no frost here. It was 36F briefly on Sat AM and Sun AM was 41F. I went out at a little before 7am to check for frost. None front (treed) or back (more open). Todays "scattered showers at best" became a deluge and thunder with almost 1 1/2" here in NPR. Bravo weatherman! Wish I was that wrong lol! But it is welcomed and the heaviest rains since October easily. Now, after a cooler Thursday, the remainder of the 7 days looks nice and warmer - just the way it is suppose to be. :P

I only measured right at a tenth of an inch of rain today with the cold frontal passage. We are definitely in need of a significant rain event over Northeast Florida. I have only measured barely over an inch of rain total at my locale since mid December.

One thing certainly evident for the time being is that there are no indications of any polar or arctic air masses to affect Florida or the Southeast US for at least the next 7-10 days looking at the recent model runs. Enjoy this warm spell everyone while it lasts.

80s today in much of Florida, downright toasty. It will be interesting to see if the projected positive PNA/negative NAO setup near the end of the month and into February affects us all that much. All I know is that there have been an awful lot of beach days this winter that are more typical of March and April.

The CPC is still holding to above norm temps through Feb, and one of the models is showing neutral for both. I checked back to 2007 when the same thing occurred (warm early then neutral to neg AO, nuetral NAO) and there were a few cold snaps but none were severe. In my hope all stays neutral because it would be a shame to see it get real cold after all this warmth! btw no 80's here. DHO came in during the afternoon with a seabreeze so best we did was 75F in New Port Richey. I was so looking forward to a sunny weekend but at least its not cold!

FLORIDA ROUND UP Tue Jan 24 2012

A warm day pretty much state wide.

Highest temps: Fort Myers 85F (tied a 2010 record for Jan 24) , and other warm readings reported at Punta Gorda 84F,
and 83F at Winter Haven, Gainesville.

The coolest daytime highs were reported at Apalachicola and at Panama City with those sites checking in with 72F.

The coolest reading overnight was at Brooksville with 51F.
The warmest readings overnight were found in the Keys, 72F at both Key West and at Marathon, and an almost equally warm 71F at Pompano Beach.

Welcome showers early this morning dropped 0.29 inches of rain at the Palm Beach Int Airport, on what has been an otherwise very dry month. Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers have yet to see any appreciable rainfall since the year started. And Vero Beach hasn't seen anything at all.
