More than 80 dead in European winter weather

#1 Postby Crostorm » Mon Dec 21, 2009 7:50 pm

More than 80 people have died across Europe as days of snow storms and sub-zero temperatures swept the continent, causing traffic chaos for millions.

At least 42 people have frozen to death in Poland over the last three days and another 27 in Ukraine.

Another 13 people died in car accidents in Austria, Finland and Germany, where temperatures fell to -33C (-27F).

Air, rail and road transport links were disrupted across northern Europe where more snow was expected in coming days.

Eurostar said it would run a "restricted" service on Tuesday after a three-day shutdown stranded some 75,000 people.

Only passengers originally due to travel Saturday or Sunday would be eligible, and the remaining backlog would be cleared over the next few days.

The crisis prompted French President Nicolas Sarkozy to call the head of national rail carrier SNCF, the majority stakeholder in Eurostar.

Meanwhile Eurotunnel - which carries vehicles under the Channel between England and France - said its terminal at Folkestone was at "saturation point" and closed its shuttle car service to new arrivals.

In Poland, police appealed for people to help if they came across homeless or drunk people lying outside, as temperatures dropped towards -20C in some areas.

Most of the 42 people who froze to death in the country over the weekend were homeless, police said.

Meanwhile, one restaurant owner offered tens of thousands of homeless people a hot meal in Krakow's main square.

"The food is not the only important thing," restaurateur Janusz Kosciuszko was quoted as telling Euronews.

"What is also important is that these people know that someone is thinking about them."

Cold-related deaths were also reported in France, where two homeless people died.

Treacherous travel conditions also caused havoc for rail services.

Fifty people were injured when a train hit a buffer in the Croatian city of Zagreb, while 36 were injured when a passenger train derailed in Paris.

Parts of the continent saw 20in (50cm) of snow over the weekend.

In France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, airport operators struggled to clear runways amid thick snowfall, with major disruption to flight patterns.

In France, a second wave of snowstorms hit the country's north on Sunday with Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport warning as many as one in five flights was likely to be cancelled on Monday.

Germany's third largest airport - in Dusseldorf - was also closed because of Sunday's heavy snow.

In Belgium, the three biggest airports - Brussels, Charleroi and Liege - were completely shut. Severe delays and cancellations were reported at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

Moscow said it was deploying 9,000 snow ploughs to clear the city's streets.

Temperatures were forecast to rise later in the week.

There isn't really anything lying out there in central London as it didn't really settle but it is very icy. As soon as you head out of the London the snow builds up pretty quickly though. I've got 16cm at home right now. Some areas have 30cm+.

Also was very cold last night. Benson down to -17.7C and Manchester down to -17.6C. Even as of 12:30pm it has only reached -8C in Manchester.

Only about 1.5-2 inches of snow here, but it's been damn cold. Forecast is for -20 in Scotland tonight, about -8 here I think.

No, it´s OK. The cold has been mostly dry, sometimes with rh of 40 or 50 %. Salt peaked the 200 € per ton and wintersevice has quit all over the county. So the situation is definately freaky.

Germany grapples with relentless winter weather

Published: 2 Feb 10 13:15 CET
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/society/20100202-24973.html

Unrelenting winter weather forced the evacuation of a Baltic Sea island and caused hundreds of traffic accidents in Germany on Tuesday, as another storm threatened to dump more snow across much of the country.

Police reported some 900 weather-related accidents in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia alone in the early morning hours. One person died in Münsterland and 64 suffered serious injuries, according to the police.

Drifting snow and icy conditions also caused problems in the southern state of Bavaria, leading to kilometre-long traffic jams and dozens of accidents.

An icebreaker failed to reach the Baltic Sea island Hiddensee late on Monday evening, forcing authorities to use helicopters to replenish dwindling food supplies and return trapped holidaymakers to the mainland.

The German Weather Service (DWD) on Tuesday warned the storm front “Miriam” was likely to pound the northwestern part of the country with high winds and heavy snow. At least five to 10 centimetres of the white stuff is expected at lower elevations and mountainous regions could be blanketed with 20 centimetres within the next 12 hours.

“Making things worse over the course of the day will be the increasingly brisk wind, which will bring strong gusts to lower-lying areas and stormy gusts to the mountains,” said DWD meteorologist Marcus Beyer.

The western regions might see the snow turn to sleet and rain later on, increasing the risk of ice after temperatures plunge on Tuesday night. This could also cause trees and branches to collapse under the added weight.

The heavy precipitation will reach the southern half of the country overnight, meaning driving conditions are likely to be treacherous nationwide on Wednesday morning.

The DWD said conditions were likely to remain changeable over the next few days with temperatures ranging on either side of freezing mark.

Just thought I'd say that for the UK as a whole this winter was the coldest for 31 years and for Scotland it was the 2nd coldest in the last century and only a FRACTION milder then the coldest ever up there, which is quite frankly unreal!
