Passau Germany Bears Worst Flooding Since 1501

#1 Postby Cyclenall » Thu Jun 06, 2013 12:25 pm

Spiegel wrote:Amid the worst flooding seen in half a millennium, the streets of Passau have been transformed into canals, full of soldiers evacuating pensioners in rubber boats. Though the water is receding, the worst is yet to come with the assessment of damages in the Bavarian town.

Inside Resch, a shoe shop in the center of Passau, the colorful spring collection floats in brown water, while next door Fritz Uhrmann sits in his third-floor apartment and refuses to be evacuated. He also wants the soldiers to leave. Since Monday evening they have been navigating Passau's streets, which now look more like canals, in rubber boats.

The flooding in recent days is the worst that this historic Bavarian city has seen in 500 years. But the full extent of the damage won't be clear until the water recedes. "The worst is yet to come," says Lt. Col. Thorsten Klapp, who is with the contingent of 150 Bundeswehr soldiers who were sent to help fight the flood.

Many bizarre scenes are playing out in the "City of Three Rivers," which is usually so proud of its location right where the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers meet. Streetlights are bobbing on the water surface like buoys and an abandoned, half-submerged car is blinking furiously, its alarm system triggered by its movement in the water.

This seemed pretty intense, 500 year flood. I recall Britain having a 1,000 year flood in 2010. Who kept track of flood waters back then? .Flooding worldwide is ramping up so far this June.

Yeah, posted something on it in the European weather thread a few days ago.

Once in 1000 years scenario for pretty much all towns and communities along the Danube river in Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary at the very least. Crest is moving at a glacial pace, too. Now somewhere in Austria.

All three major German rivers, Rhine, Danube and Elbe were in flood over the past 5 days and still are - Danube and Elbe are by far the worst though.

If you need a comparison I'd say it's pretty much on par with the Tennessee floods 2010 along both Danube and Elbe. Pretty disastrous stuff.

Several of the buildings in the old town are well over 700 years old.

In terms of writing it looks like it's from the late 19th century. So not all that recently ;)

Things still looking pretty dire, especially down the Elbe in Saxony Anhalt and further down the river. And they've been getting more rain over the past day or two.
