Mount Washington presents the most severe combinations of wind, cold, icing and storminess available anywhere in the world where people are on hand to take measurements. The summit lies in the path of the principal storm tracks and air mass routes affecting the northeastern United States, and it is, because of its elevation, biologically and ecologically similar to the subarctic zone.

High pressure will move off the coast today. This will set up a westerly flow over the region and we will experience increasing clouds. Tonight a weak low will move in from the West, touching off a few snow showers over the North and mountains. A developing low will move Northeast from the Carolina coast and bring steady light snow in southern areas for Friday. Limited Services Restored to Observatory;
Crew Reoccupies Summit
Two Summit Buildings Destroyed by Sunday Fire; Origin Remains Unknown

MOUNT WASHINGTON, NH – February 10, 2003 – At 2:00 PM EST, Mount Washington Observatory Staff Meteorologist Christin Perruzzi made the first step in reoccupying the summit of Mount Washington by recording the first weather observations since fire destroyed the State of NH summit power plant Sunday afternoon. The temperature at 2:00 PM was 6 degrees Fahrenheit, winds averaged 46 mph and fog limited visibility to 1/8 of a mile.

Despite these typical winter conditions, staff from the Mount Washington Observatory returned to the summit weather station after being evacuated Sunday as a safety precaution. Observatory officials made their way back to the summit via snow tractor on Monday afternoon to assess the damage caused by Sunday’s fire and to reestablish their post atop the northeast’s highest peak. The Observatory has maintained a continuous presence at the summit of Mount Washington since 1932.

The State of New Hampshire’s power generation facility on Mount Washington and a smaller backup generator building were both destroyed by Sunday’s blaze. No other buildings on the summit sustained significant damage. A team of state officials and operational personnel also traveled to the summit to evaluate the damage caused by the fire and to determine a course of action.

Through the efforts of Observatory Director of Research Ken Rancourt and Observer Derek Brown, heat has been restored to the Mount Washington Observatory. By the end of the evening, power will be supplied to the entire facility, as state officials transport a large temporary generator to the summit. A longer-term back-up generator will be transported to the summit tomorrow.

“No later than tomorrow, we hope to have the Observatory’s automated systems back in action, doing the work that needs to be done up there,” said Observatory Executive Director John Hammer Monday afternoon. “When our computer systems are up and running, we’ll be able to resume transmitting data.”

Today’s weather observations have been reported to the National Weather Service by cellular phone, and normal data transmissions will resume when power and phone service is restored. Dr. Peter Crane, Director of Programs, inspected the rest of the Observatory’s facility and found nothing out of order after the facility was evacuated Sunday evening. Rancourt, Brown, Crane and Perruzzi will remain at the Observatory through the night.
