Historical two winter cyclones in Dalmatia: What really happened?

The whole "story" began back during Wednesday's first day of February Days before that East Europe is freezing under the influence of extreme cold air associated with the Siberian branch of the anticyclone. Cold continental air day after day is approaching ever closer to central and western Europe, and when he reached the Mediterranean, where it was much warmer, Italy over the cyclone formed as a reaction to the arrival of cold air masses.

Flora low

The first cyclone was called Flora and during Wednesday highlighted the impact on time in Dalmatia.Secondary cyclonic center was developing on south adriatic, and was blowing strong south wind, remind us of island of Palagruža to have recorded an incredible wave of 9 meters. At the same time at the foot the Velebit blew strong east wind. Between these two directions perpendicular to the wind, on the greater part of the coast blew the Levant - the east wind. The snow turns from rain in Zadar, Sibenik, Ploce, Vid, Metkovic.

Wendsday
Image

Time during Thursday's only temporary calmed down. Scirocco wind at sea stopped and blew everywhere moderate to strong east winds with a slight drop in temperature.Late in the evening in the south of Dalmatia was blowing sirocco, in central Dalmatia began to fall little snow.

Record low Gabor

Almost the entire day throughout most of northern and central Dalmatia was snowing. In Zagora, the situation deteriorated with snow from minute to minute. Split and Sibenik they woke up with a blizzard with just -5 ° C and -6 ° C. The snow was literally buried Zabiokovlje and Imotski, and the Neretva Valley.

Saturday
Image

By the end of Friday the situation in large parts of Dalmatia began to be alarming, but only followed the worst. The first hours of Saturday in southern Dalmatia was thunderstorms, North of Sibenik was snowing and with the arrival of a little colder air, the rain turned into snow again in Split and was attacked the evening of historic 25cm of snow.
It was demolished previous record high of January 1979. In Sibenik is tied previous record of 1956. year, 35 centimeters. About a meter snow buried Imotski and the entire surrounding area, and the most snow fell in Vrgorac 112 cm. Vrgorska villages, like many villages in Zagora are completely cut off from the rest of the world.
Snow has fallen on some islands such as Brac, Ugljan, Pasman, on Dugi otok fall 7 cm of snow.
For example, the previous record for the duration of snow cover in a series of Split is four days. It is absolutely certain that the current snow cover in Split last at least another week.

Temperature records are not "endangered", but the upcoming night will be very cold in the valleys of Zagora temperature can sometimes drop to -15 from -10 ° C, a moderate frost will be a large part of the coast and islands.

Impressive pictures , thanks for sharing. Sure mother nature likes to play bad jokes on us, Europe is freezing while US-Mexico-Central America have had warmer than normal temps, why can't we have average weather?

While the greater part of Dalmatia hit a record high with snow, the Peljesac peninsula with snow, hit the other troubles - icy rain. Icy rain when there is temperature inversion, and this is exactly what happened last Friday. Icy rain freezes as it hits the surface on which to fall, thus increasing pile of ice.
