PETS and Hurricane Katrina

#1 Postby seaswing » Sat Aug 27, 2005 8:52 am

I Posted this on another thread but I believe it needs it's own heading...

Remember....most pets pick up on our emotions and they act accordingly. I believe that if you are nervous, they will be nervous. They are probably saying... Please don't leave me behind if you evacuate! PLEASE protect your pets as you would your family! take them with you! board them in a safe shelter or take them to your destination. DO NOT leave them outside chained up or in a fence because if the winds and flooding come to your area, they have no way to escape. Also, if you HAVE to leave them home, do not lock them in a room. Let them roam the house so that they can find a higher of safer place to be. In the last few years, there has been a major shift in reasoning and there are now more shelters set up for animals. PLEASE PROTECT THEM TOO!

Mods, do you think this could be made a sticky???

Bo goes everywhere we go. He is a 90 lb black lab and there is no way I would leave him home. He is part of our family. I agree with this post because unfortunately people forget about the little ones when preparing for a storm.

I moved this thread to the Hurricane Prep Forum from Talking Tropics. I think it's an important piece of preparing for a hurricane.

There are numerous hotel chains that do allow pets. The following links provide information as to which hotel chains they are and where they are located.

For Hurricane Evacs, most of the hotels make exceptions with some restrictions (usually small animal type and sometimes deposits). It never hurts to ask.

Further, I strongly reccommend, whether you decide to ride it out, or evacuate with your pets, that you purchase animal tranquilizers. It's not uncommon for pets to die of heart attacks from fear during a storm, or from overheating on a long car ride while evacuating. "Doggie dope" helps your pet relax during these stressful times.

It is not fear that causes them to have the heart attacks. It is the drop in pressure.

I was in NOLA for aftermath work (rode out storm in Mobile).

I saw dreadful things, but nothing was more heart rending than three dogs paddling past our rescue boat and climbing on shed. I know what they were saying with their eyes as we passed them by. (I couldn't get the coxswain to stop...I tried)

Then I saw one tied to a fence...he drowned there.

Others were locked inside houses...their eyes too spoke volumes as we went past.

I spoke to people after who were trying to find their pet at the Humanne Soc. shelter and elsewhere. Lots of people had this idea that they wouldn't be able to evac to a hotel with a pet.

OK...so the hotel won't let you stay with a pet...CAMP IN THE GARAGE LIKE WE DO ON THESE THINGS.

6 canes and counting and rarely do I stay in hotels. You can camp out for a few days if it comes to that.

People have choices, animals don't. There is no excuse.

I so agree Jim - mine pet would go with me and we would stay in our van if it came down to it - of course far enough away from the storm not to hits us.

If I lived in an area proned to hurricanes, I would take my cat and dog with me. I would find a place to stay with them.
