Weather Radios

#1 Postby tidesong » Fri Apr 14, 2006 9:31 am

Okay, I wasn't quite sure where to post this, but I figure this forum gets enough traffic to be useful....

After getting hit by huge hail last night, I've decided it's probably time for me to get a SAME Weather Radio.

I'm looking for suggestions. What do you recommend, or what do you discourage, and why? Pros/cons are useful. I'd like to stay around $50 or less, but will spend more if there's good reason.

Sources for buying online would be good, too.

Thanks in advance.

I've been meaning to buy one too. Try doing a search on this forum, as I'm betting this topic has come up, for some recommendations.

They all do the job. I'd pay more, if I had to, for the following features:
a. portable, but with a/c power adapter
b. uses common batteries
c. adjustable alarm volume
d. on-demand weather radio broadcast whenever you just want to listen
e. S.A.M.E. localized - ability to broadcast warnings only for my immediate county (not the entire NWS area responsibility) while I'm trying to sleep

I have a WR-100 and love it!

That WM store sells these for about $25

I bought this unit almost a year ago. It has adjustable volume for alert and voice, S.A.M.E., alert lock (you can choose whether or not you want alert for most situations), and best of all (in my opinion), is the ability to have the radio automatically turn on the broadcast, and following the alert, the radio will automatically go back to "standby." It is nice if you don't want to mess with buttons much (or don't feel like waking up to find out what is happening.)

I'd realy like a SAME radio. Environment Canada installed the SAME technology, but you can't buy weather radios in Canada, and most businesses don't ship here. 80% of our severe weather here probably hits after 8pm in the summer, I'd like something to wake me up.

Is there some legal reason why they can't be shipped up there? Otherwise maybe I could get you one and send it up....

Any RadioShack model is great, IMHO. I've got 2 myself. 1 desktop and 1 portable.

I just ordered a Midland weather radio from Amazon earlier this evening.

I got this one recently and like it a lot. It's on sale at Amazon for $49.42 from $79.99, plus free shipping. It has excellent reviews and it looks like the only real complaint with it is the buttons make a beep when you push them, so you might not want to use it as an alarm clock too. Hardly a complaint with me...I didn't even notice. lol
It is 1000 times better than the Midland weather alert it was replacing. I love the S.A.M.E. technology. Just click on the picture to view it and read reviews at Amazon.

I bought one last year from Radio Shack. It is S.A.M.E. radio. It is portable and can go wherever you go. Has a belt clip which is great if you are hiking. Below is a link to the one I bought. It goes for around $49.95 but they have a couple which are new and are listed for $29.99. We love ours.
