How do I install storm panels on my garage door?

I have a row of small windows along the top of my garage door. They are my only windows in my garage, so I want to keep them. A friend of mine gave me some storm panels that he no longer needed. Yes, they were free. So, I am trying to figure out how to mount the panels to the door without damaging the door. I was thinking of using some thread rod and wingnuts through a hole on the door, but how do I do that without tearing the metal. Is there some kind of washer that I can use to reinforce the hole in the garage door? The panels are aluminum, but they are about 5 feet long. So, I am going to have to drill some additional holes to support the weight.
