This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

What links can't you live without during hurricane season?

#1 Postby Duddy » Fri Apr 11, 2008 6:50 pm

I lost all my old bookmarks and am using this post as a way to find them, and of course to share with new members who don't know where to start.

So, what links do you find invaluable during hurricane season?

PS: I'm specifically looking for models. But post others.

God ... too many to count. Some of my top ones:

Satellite
CIMSS: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/real- ... winds.html
NASA GOES: http://weather.msfc.nasa.gov/GOES/
SSD: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/trop-atl.html
CIRA AMSU: http://amsu.cira.colostate.edu/

upper air data
Unisys: http://weather.unisys.com/upper_air/hemisphere.html

models
NCEP: http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/
PSU E-wall: http://www.meteo.psu.edu/~gadomski/ewall.html
FSU models page: http://moe.met.fsu.edu/tcgengifs/

analysis sites
NOAA TCHP: http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/phod/cyclone/data/
OPC: http://www.opc.ncep.noaa.gov/UA.shtml
HPC: http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/
of course NHC: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

There's tons more that I use now and then.

EDIT:

operational model guidance: http://euler.atmos.colostate.edu/~vigh/guidance/

And if anyone can remind me where the link for west Africa and Cape Verde soundings is ... I seem to have lost it. Specifically, there's a site somewhere that offers Hovmoller Diagrams of the humidity readings in the Cape Verde and Dakar soundings ...

Another nicely set up upper air site: http://weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/sounding.html

SSD archive: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/flt/t1/

Just replace the 1 with any number to switch floaters.

Before they closed it to the public the USAF high res pics were the best. Are there any comparable sites that give super high res pics?

http://raleighwx.easternuswx.com/models.html

On the right side there are links for the hurricane model spaghettie plots (ATCF), also fast updating GFDL/HWRF output. All this generated using gempak. Also on my satellite page I will post zoomed in McIdas shots courtesy of gempak when applicable.

You know the single best analog year, 1950, left Texas completely in the clear. 1999 was similar, and Bret was coming North, but hit the big ridge and turned sharply West just North of BRO.

As dry as its been, and probably will be, a tropical storm in August might be welcome, but not likely, IMHO.

This topic already exists, and that one had maybe 130+ weather links for tropical cyclones. I'm not sure why this new one was made since we can just add to the older one.
