Yep and over (for tropical standards) icebergs...don't get hypothermia trying to form over there!

high latitude, yes... but its been persistant as hell. It appears to be at least something subtropical. I don't think anyone's paid this attention with all the all invest activity.

I can't believe the NHC is looking at this because of the LAT. Nonetheless, it has been persistant and producing convection around the center.

This low now is at about 42 to 43°N and I remember a few systems named in this region or only a little to the south of this region. So why not have a look at this system?

If you look closely there seems to be some kind of inflow toward the center of the low pressure denoted by weak convective bands.

The models dissipate this in less than 48 hours, by the way. It's just a weak low, nothing to get excited about.

A NEARLY STATIONARY AND RATHER STRONG NON-TROPICAL LOW HAS DEVELOPED
ABOUT 700 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF CAPE RACE NEWFOUNDLAND per 1130 awips heading

so now that you see it is strong and acquiring more tropical characteristics do you still say don't name it? ( for the record, i'm sitting on the fence)

PROS: Small system, doesn't looked attached to a front, convection near center

CONS: Very high latitude, marginal SST, weak convection

The question of the MILLION dollars (or do you prefer Euros!!):

Fill in the blank: If it's not tropical, and not non-tropical, then it is ________ ?

I still say extratropical at this point. Still wouldn't be surprised to see 98L on this...

A NEARLY STATIONARY AND RATHER STRONG NON-TROPICAL LOW HAS DEVELOPED
ABOUT 700 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF CAPE RACE NEWFOUNDLAND. THIS
SYSTEM HAS BEGUN TO ACQUIRE SOME TROPICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND WILL
BE CLOSELY MONITORED FOR SIGNS OF ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS SYSTEM CAN BE FOUND IN HIGH SEAS
FORECASTS ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE...UNDER AWIPS
HEADER NFDHSFAT1 AND WMO HEADER FZNT01 KWBC.

Subtropical Storm seems highly likely at this point.

All that Recon would be looking for is a warm core...and where would they fly out of for there? It is way too far away from the US.

That's why is said "j/k" at the end. It wouldn't make sense to send RECON to a low pressure system that is only a shipping menace at most.

TWO 1030 EDT:

A NEARLY STATIONARY NON-TROPICAL LOW IS CENTERED ABOUT 700 MILES
EAST-SOUTHEAST OF CAPE RACE NEWFOUNDLAND. THE ASSOCIATED
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY HAS DIMINISHED...AND UPPER-LEVEL WINDS HAVE
BECOME LESS FAVORABLE FOR TROPICAL OR SUBTROPICAL CYCLONE
DEVELOPMENT. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS SYSTEM CAN BE FOUND IN
HIGH SEAS FORECASTS ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE...UNDER
AWIPS HEADER NFDHSFAT1 AND WMO HEADER FZNT01 KWBC.

FORECASTER BEVEN
______________

Almost 5 Invests and just one developed. You gotta love the tropics!!!

Ahhh man! I really thought this would form! I'm gonna go lock myself in my room to think about extratropical cyclones and get all depressed. Then I'm gonna blog about it on livejournal, and pluck one string on my guitar, and cry...
