Abundance of fruits meaning a sign of an approaching cane?

#1 Postby Gustywind » Tue Aug 05, 2008 10:06 am

I don't know if this topic seems only for those who live in the Carib ( hope no and i tkink no too :).
But in our culture in Guadeloupe and i tkink the others carib islands, we have often attribute that the abundance of fruits always means "a cane for us" in many seasons during the past.
The ancients often were looking at the trees the flowers and others signs ( dogs, cows...) and the abundance of fruits has often be a remarquable critera in some seasons, but as usual we should be prudent in this assertion, that's pretty subjective and inked in our way of life , our roots...our folks lol.

But for me... it's a way to introduce my subject, and today i was surfing on the net on stormcarib.com , and i thought about this thing...because someone has cleary talked about that, without speaking any future or thread , but i have suddenly the  :) ....so i wonder if this is an interresting sign to get for you in the others islands ( Windwards Leewards Northern Leewards PR etc....) and for you my others friends from :flag: .

If you have infos during the past seasons, canes hitting your island, country, all the signs before i would be proud to learn it and happy to read it.

Abundance of Fruits

"The August Bank Holiday weather here has been fantastic, lots of sunshine with a great breeze. We have been bathing in the river as it is definitely cooler than the sea.

On holidays people go to the rivers and yesterday was no exception. The part of the river we live very close to is where the swing bridge was swept away in hurricane David. The river here is wide and deep, there is a great rock for diving or jumping off into the cool waters. The Wacky rollers who take tourists down the river in tubes and canoes use this spot to start their tour. In the winter months with the cruise ships utilizing this facility it can become a bit congested. Tubing is a great way of seeing the river from a different perspective, we have not had this adventure yet, but are putting it on our to do list!

We can't get over the fact that fruit is in such abundance in this country. Most mornings we have a bowl of fruit which consists of papaya, bananas, pineapple, sugar apple and yogurt. Sugar apple is just wonderful it tastes like a fruit version of custard, it is creamy and rich and smooth; we are growing it in the garden. The avocados are in abundance and starting to fall ripe off the trees. We really could be totally self sufficient if we wanted to be vegetarian which we of course we don't. The dogs are amazing because they are forever turning up with bunches of bananas, papaya and coconuts full of rich milk. We literally have food dropped at our door. It truly is amazing. We thank our blessings.
Once again we had a lot of rain in the night, which was fortuitous as we planted a load of lettuce in the garden yesterday. It seems to rain every night and be sunny all day the conditions could not be better for growing. We feel we live in a paradise, literally the garden of Eden".

In my opinion, i remembered in 1998 and 1999 when we have Georges 1998 and Lenny 1999...an amazing abundance of fruits were evident , i personnaly see that, and the most evident was the leetches especially   near St Claude, HUC one of our nicitiest correspondant from the carib island of Basse Terre ( Basse Terre is just near St Claude) surely knows that much more than me lol , St CLaude is near our Volcano La Soufrière, so it's moist and bit fresh here, "the perfect conditions " in this area to see in some years letchees developping that depends...in abundance :) . Whereas i love this fruit ( hummm :D ). It's very special to have leetchees in Guadeloupe, often rarely, but but but...frequently ...the years with leetchees have sometimes indicated a trend to " see something for us" given the ancients  . I have not researchs on this, maybe HUC from Basse Terre have surely more infos on that, he has pretty interresting docs in store concerning our weather here, :D :) and hope that you others islanders and friends from :flag: can " help me", on this "type of occurence"( can we speak about that too, should it verifies too that's my aim goal too :) ).

Moreover, in 1998, 1999 we have had in profusion   mangos too, and avocados and muche more fruits, i forgot the others....everbody was speaking in the island of Guadeloupe about that  .

But, curiously in these two years ( 1998, 1999) there was not any dots for the ancients: "something should hit Guadeloupe". I don't have any infos from them this year, but i should in cas of and for my personnal curiosity.
Whereas sometimes, there is many signs testifying that something is going to hit an island or a country....Whereas, do not forget that i stay in our folk, myth, because it's typical from the islands with maybe some differencies, and afterwards it's a way to a get our roots inked in our skin and too... a little way to secure us against mother nature ( a time..lol).

If you have any info on this i will be glad, i always want to anticipate a real thread and be the more informative as possible :).
Note that i don't want to say that this year given my thread and the reply from this report of Lisette Stevens that we would have to deal with something,( but i have a flash) to classify and analyse all the signs before a cane for example....
As usual thougts are welcomed on...i hope...this wide subject.

Nice regards from Guadeloupe, Gustywind. :)

The logic behind the theory is that the weather pattern (rain, etc) that allowed the fruits to "be fruitful and multiply" are conducive to guiding a storm your way..sort of like a Hebert Box..

Should i add Hurricane José ( cat 1) on Guadeloupe in October 1999 ( 20 th) :). Do not forget that it was the first that a CANE crossed the Lesser Antilles after the 15th of October given all the infos during the past from the weather service of Meteo France; and the ancients who loves tracking the canes. :).

Here in Puerto Rico, the older people talk about it as this comes from centuries ago.I personnally dont pay much attention to the Mangos or Aguacates, but when the people talk about lack of those fruits,it means no hurricane strike and if theres are abundant of Mangos and Aguacates, then we will be hit.

Ok tkanks, it's interesting in our country, it looks like pretty similar here, when we have mangoos and avocados in excess that's not a good sign for us meaning a thread for the ancients.
This year that was just a little abundant not as 1998 , 1998. I have no infos concerning the letchees in Guadeloupe, maybe HUC have more on that because he lives near St Claude and you have numerous trees of letchees in this area :) .

Ohhh tkanks my friend, i'm glad to see that you like it, i try to to my best here, i love the weather, thus i'm proud that you congratulate me on this :D :) :P .
Hope i'm surely WRONG, but i read carefully when you talk about your avocadoes :cheesy: . In definitive, hope that " I did not remember this many in the past however who knows....." won't mean something for us, we should be on our guard in case if  :( but i stay optimistic and let's appreciate the fair weather here and in the Carib islands. I appreciate you post too, happy to see the way of writing with a lot of enthusiam, it's typical from the Carib the sun is in our heart : :D :)  !

My backyard orange tree has a single orange on it this year.

Maybe that is why Edouard never got past being a tropical storm.

Hi Gusty...here in St. Thomas on the northside, the French community says, "no avocados, no hurricanes"....we have plenty of them (avocados)....also, looking back, Montserrat volcano erupted in July of 1995, and not long after we were hit with Marilyn....well, as you know, it erupted again in July of this year, so I'm hoping it's just a coincidence....I also watch the birds and the iguanas...if they go on a "feeding frenzy", then disappear, you kind of know something is up....but as always, we prepare for the worst and hope for the best....it's just a way of life!

Seeing Man of War birds is also a sign here in Florida.

Since the birds tend to stay way out to sea, if they start showing up inshore, that lets you know something is out there, coming this way, and too big to fly around.

In Mississippi none of our orange trees have bared fruit since Katrina.
I planted them 4 years before Katrina and had fruit each year
until Katrina ripped off every fruit and leaf they had. They
are growing well and look great... just no fruit.

I have heard something about that and acorns / oaks, but I can't remember whether it's abundance of acorns = storm likely, or lack of acorns = storm likely.

Waouw nice reply, very very interresting good eye tkanks a lot for all these info, congratulations i'm glad .
If this can help everbody to prepare or have a better idea if something can hit us, that's " a good thing" or appreciable afterwards.

Yep, very good post i learnt something concerning Monsterrat and Marylin in 1995 very curious coincidence, i'm a little dubtfull, for my part usually i don't believe in any coincidence, nothings occurs like that, but time will tell especially this year because you're speaking about it 13 years laters in July Monsterrat was in eruption (Volcano)and Marylin hit you!!!waouw!!!amazing, time will tell:oops:.

Your observations are fairly fascinating "the birds and the iguanas" that's great. I did not know for the iguanas.....
I knew that in 1989 for HUGO some birds were on church in LE MOULE ( east of Guadeloupe) and a type of indicated something terrible they were on the Holy Cross near 4 pm and HUGO passed at 6pm approximately. They call this type of birds in french "MALFINI" meaning that something will turn dramatically.

Whereas in my observations, i knew that HUGO passed during the full moon, in Guadeloupe the 16th of September, and sometimes the ancients were anticipated something special during the full moon, but pretty difficult to affirm that, because others canes have not crossed the island whithout being during the full moon, so that's not too much credible sometimes. But as usual, watch watch all that you can it could be a sign... hope for the best scenario not the worst, and if it's the worst... keep the faith

That's one I've never heard, even after living in South Florida for most of my life - it might just mean a good growing season, so that's actually a good thing (a/k/a "An abundant harvest...")...

I've seen many very healthy mango and avacado growing seasons - that were during El Nino periods - so, I'd have to say no to your question...

P.S. About 10 years ago we were very concerned when it was mentioned that sea turtles were found to be nesting very high in the dunes, allowing some to think what you're mentioning, but, thankfully nothing else happened...

P.P.S. Actually, I've heard that good growing seasons are often followed by early winters, so...
