Can't wait to see that one butchered in 2014. It's 4 syllables. E'-seye-E'-us
If you read it in Spanish, it's really easy to pronounce.

Isaias sure sounds like a book and character in the Bible to me. Eye-Zay-Us. I ain't pronouncing it differently.
I know a guy named Isaisis and his name is pronounced Ee-sigh-ee-sus, but the namelist clearly spells the 2014 name as Isaias. I think they will pronounce it with a Spanish accent in Spanish-speaking countries, and we will pronounce it with an English butchering here, and that should be fine.
I'm kinda bummed about Katia's official pronunciation. I liked "caught ya" much better. It sounds exotic.

Hell, there was enough trouble with Georges and Beryl.
Known enough old ladies to know it rhymes with Pearl.

I am not a meteorologist, and any posts made by me are not official forecasts or to be interpreted as being intelligent. These posts are just my opinions and are probably silly opinions.

In Texas it rhymes with Pearl. In the northern US the old ladies pronounce it about the same as the word "barrel". just as the Merriam Webster website pronounces the word:

Which would be a butchering of the proper pronunciation. I'm sure that's how most will pronounce it across the U.S.

Not according to the National Hurricane Center's pronunciation guide:

Hm. It's a variant of the Russian "Katya", so I'm not sure why the insist on ka-TEE-ah. Don't mind if I still pronounce it "kat-ya". ;D

Re: Katia and Rina
Well it's 2011 now, we'll see what happens with these names.
If the early prediction is correct, we may get down to Rina. But that's only a guess at this moment.

LOL yeah. But what if Karolina made landfall in one of the Carolinas? That would be kinda bad.
I would have suggested Kelly and Raquel!
My name is Kelly and I have a friend named Raquel. You don't want to see our destruction.

xxxhumbertoxxx wrote:Isn't Rina a Japanese name?
Like many short names, Rina has multiple possible derivations. In addition to being a short form of Katherina/Katrina in several languages, it has separate Hebrew, Sanskrit, and Japanese origins:
http://www.behindthename.com/name/rina-1
http://www.behindthename.com/name/rina-2
http://www.behindthename.com/name/rina-3
http://www.behindthename.com/name/rina-4
I think it's extremely unlikely, though, that those who suggested this for the Atlantic list were thinking of the Japanese origin.
