Just read the data. 175mph is still a respectable windspeed at landfall. The 900mb pressure at landfall ties it with Gilbert as the second most intense to make landfall in the Western Hemisphere. The pressure also moves it into sole possession of 6th place of most intense Atlantic hurricanes.

The 900 is actually a data compromise based on a 904 pressure from another barometer that was discovered near the radar center and a suspect reading of 897.

I think Allen will be found at 160 or 165 kt - but its peak winds and peak pressure will be at different points. The 910mb pressure found in the far eastern Atlantic, early in the lifespan, would likely support that intensity given its small size and rapid motion (Dean carried 145 kt with a 929mb pressure), while the 899mb pressure near the Yucatan was with a larger, slower storm (I'd go 150-155 kt at that time).

I'm in San Diego at the 31st AMS conference on tropical meteorology. Saw a talk by Margie Kieper yesterday on Camille. She had a loop from the New Orleans radar - an image every 10 min from when it came in range. Could really see the double eye structure. New Orleans was taking a snapshot of radar every minute during Camille, but Margie could only get the 10-min images for free.

Back in 1991, the Weather Channel aired a special that was later released on VHS called "Danger's Edge". It was about past hurricanes that had struck the U.S.

Anyway, I remember there being a loop of satellite or radar images of Camille from birth to landfall on the Gulf coast. I can't remember if it was an actual loop or an animation based on satellite images. Does anybody else remember this?

It was a lot of work to convert the 1-min negatives to digital images. Margie asked what she could get "for free" and that was 10% of the images. Even with the images in digital format, she still had to map them to a grid to make the loop, which took about 60hrs work. Everyone was asking her for the radar loop but I don't think she wanted to distribute copies. The loop will eventually be public, most likely.

Can't be. The 1935 was supposedly a very small system. I'm wondering if it would have looked like Iris in 2001 or Charley in 2004.
