A little late, but the tweet being replied to mentions that ACE accumulated by 01L is 1.62 when it really is 1.42. He accidentally included the landfall point when calculating it; definitely has happened to me before too. :D

So it appears they are cutting costs with these reports. If a storm does not affect land (no watches or warnings) or causes any fatalities, then they're skipping the storm history summary and just list the best track and forecasts.

If that's permanent, then many of the fish storms will have their reports out much quicker.

Has NHC ever downgraded a TS to a TD in post-analysis? Sean is a very strong candidate for one, seeing as there was no evidence for it being a TS other then a faulty Dvorak reading which was immediately contradicted by a much weaker ASCAT pass.

Gabrielle's portion in the Caribbean in 2013 was downgraded to a depression, that's the only example I know of

I think the pace of the TC reports will pick up very soon as there is not a lot that they are working on in both basins, and have more time to work on the reports and release them.

#15 Postby Teban54 » Wed Oct 25, 2023 2:53 pm

As for why it wasn't upgraded to a Cat 1:
The 60-kt peak intensity of Bret from 0600 UTC to 1200 UTC 22 June is based on a blend of subjective Dvorak intensity estimates from TAFB and SAB and data from a reconnaissance aircraft. The aircraft reported a peak SFMR surface wind of 69 kt and 700-mb flight-level winds of 55 kt (which supports an intensity of 50 kt) around 0503 UTC 22 June. Around this time, a mid-level eye-like feature was noted in microwave imagery, but this feature was displaced about 30 n mi east of the low-level center due to the westerly shear (Fig. 6). A dropsonde released by the aircraft around this time measured a minimum pressure of 996 mb with 31-kt winds. It appears that the higher SFMR winds may have been associated with transient convection associated with the mid-level eye. Therefore, a blend of the SFMR data and lower flight-level-reduced wind estimate (Fig. 2) is used as the basis for the 60-kt peak intensity estimate. At that time, the subjective Dvorak estimates ranged from T3.5 (55 kt) from SAB to T4.0 (65 kt) from TAFB. A blend of those subjective estimates also supports a 60-kt peak intensity.

So far 6 reports are out for the North Atlantic storms and 4 for the EPAC ones. Clearly, the pace of reports is picking up more faster.

The peak intensity of Don was 65kt.

Don’s peak intensity of 65 kt from 1800 UTC 22 July to 0000 UTC 23 July is supported by
a blend of the TAFB and SAB subjective Dvorak estimates and the objective SATCON guidance.
The estimated minimum central pressure of 986 mb from 1800 UTC 22 July to 0000 UTC
23 July is based on applying the Knaff-Zehr-Courtney pressure-wind relationship
