That would actually be better IMO, since a lot of pre-satellite era storms are listed as tropical storms in HURDAT when they were likely subtropical in nature. However, they only classify them as tropical because they have no satellites to prove the structure. The earliest subtropical cyclones in HURDAT are from the mid-1960s.

If Sandy had made landfall before the satellite era (and the death toll would surely be deep in the thousands in that case), it would likely have been considered a hurricane at landfall with no satellites to show its interaction with the front.

It will be interesting to see if someone from NOAA speaks about this theme to see what is their take.

I think including subtropical storms for ACE is something to think about. Good thing about satellites besides for tracking and classifying is that it saves lives.

Who has the updated WPAC ACE numbers after Bopha? I imagine it rose a lot from the 267.09.

The seasonal total for the 2012 Pacific hurricane season is now 98.21 units.

Lane is the remaining tropical cyclone without a final report. Will post the FINAL total for the season after this report is released.

The Atlantic ACE is up to 126.53 units. I should not, however, that the ACE value for Nadine has not been changed from operational to tropical cyclone report so the total is incorrect for the time being. It will take me a while to finish hers.
