How interesting. Carol, Connie, Isabel and Irene were all NC storms. Also a toss up. Look like we should avoid both letters.

Didn't Carol pass just offshore though?

OH LA LA. Definitely the I. Irene. Igor. Isabel. Isidore. Iris (my eye.) Ike. Sooner or later Ingrid will be joining the herd. Along with Isaiah. Then Ida. Who knows? :froze:

I still think they should've replaced Charley with Clyde. Then we could have had Bonnie and Clyde.

Going back to this old thread, looking at 1941-45 (post-reanalysis), the following letters I think would have been retired if they were used today:

1941 (6) - B (Texas), E (Bahamas/Florida)
1942 (11) - C (Texas)
1943 (10) - None likely
1944 (14) - D (Jamaica/Mexico), G (Great Atlantic), M (Cuba/Florida)
1945 (11) - E (Texas), I (Florida)

Again, this doesn't count undiscovered storms because of lack of satellites. But reanalysis shows what could reasonably have counted.

Also looking at reanalysis from 1946 to 1955, what letters would change?

1946 (7) - None likely
1947 (10) - D (Florida/Louisiana)
1948 (10) - H (Cuba/Florida), I (Cuba/Florida)
1949 (16) - B (Bahamas/Florida)

Named in 1950-52 using Phonetic alphabet, actual name included in the brackets:

1950 (16) - E (Easy - Florida), K (King - Florida)
1951 (12) - D (Charlie - Caribbean/Mexico)
1952 (11) - J (Fox - Cuba)

Named in 1953-55 using female names and actual retired names only, actual name included in the brackets, assumed name accounting for unnamed storms considered:

1953 (14) - None
1954 (16) - Florence (Carol), Hazel (Edna), Norma (Hazel)
1955* (13) - Brenda (Connie), Connie (Diane), Hilda (Ione), Janet (Janet)

* For 1955, assumes Alice was the first storm of 1955 and not the year-crossing storm, which would have been named Patsy under current standards.

Since the first two years of the modern naming/retirement era were reanalyzed, if everything was found and named, we would still have Carol, Edna, Diane and Ione available for circulation.

Florence would have to go off today's lists while Hilda and Norma are used in the EPAC. Brenda would be the other name retired (not currently used anyway but couldn't replace a B name). Janet would have had that name anyway, while Connie and Hazel would have been retired for different storms in their same year.

How would the 1953 to 1955 storms been named under today's rules? (Red - unchanged)

Only four storms would have kept the same name. In 1955, Hilda and Ione are switched since it was found Ione formed much earlier.

1953

Alice --> Alice
02L --> Barbara
Barbara --> Carol
Carol --> Dolly
05L --> Edna
Dolly --> Florence
Edna --> Gail
08L --> Hazel
Florence --> Irene
Gail --> Jill
11L --> Katherine
Hazel --> Lucy
13L --> Mabel
Irene --> Norma

1954

01L --> Alice
02L --> Barbara
Alice --> Carol
04L --> Dolly
Barbara --> Edna
Carol --> Florence
Dolly --> Gilda
Edna --> Hazel
09L --> Irene
Florence --> Jill
11L --> Katherine
Gilda --> Lucy
13L --> Mabel
Hazel --> Norma
15L --> Ophra
Alice 2 --> Patsy

1955

Brenda --> Alice
Connie --> Brenda
Diane --> Connie
Edith --> Diane
05L --> Edith
Flora --> Flora
Gladys --> Gladys
Ione --> Hilda
Hilda --> Ione
Janet --> Janet
11L --> Katie
12L --> Linda
Katie --> Martha

How would the 1956 to 1960 storms been named under today's rules? (Red - unchanged, blue - name would have been retired from an earlier storm, bold - name retired)

Only 2 storms - the first two of 1959 - would keep the same name (all others are messed up by unnamed storms).

1956

01L --> Anna
02L --> Betsy
Anna --> Carla
Betsy --> Dora
Carla --> Ethel
Dora --> Flossy
Ethel --> Greta
Flossy --> Hattie
09L --> Inez
10L --> Judith
Greta --> Kitty
12L --> Laura

1957

01L --> Audrey
Audrey --> Bertha
Bertha --> Carrie
Carrie --> Debbie
Debbie --> Esther
Esther --> Freida
Freida --> Gracie
08L --> Hannah

1958

01L --> Alma
Alma --> Becky
Becky --> Cleo
Cleo --> Daisy
Daisy --> Ella
Ella --> Fifi
Fifi --> Gerda
Gerda --> Helene
Helene --> Ilsa
Ilsa --> Janice
Janice --> Katy
12L --> Lila

1959

Arlene --> Arlene
Beulah --> Beulah

03L --> Cindy
Cindy --> Debra
Debra --> Edith
06L --> Flora
Edith --> Gracie
08L --> Hannah
09L --> Irene
Flora --> Judith
Gracie --> Kristy
Hannah --> Lois
Irene --> Marsha
Judith --> Nellie

1960

01L --> Abby
Abby --> Brenda
Brenda --> Cleo
Cleo --> Donna
Donna --> Ethel
06L --> Florence
Ethel --> Gladys
Florence --> Hilda

If everything was known operationally, we would have retired Bertha (and change history many times recently), Kristy and Ethel. They would be joining Florence, Hazel, Norma, Brenda, Connie, Hilda and Janet.

If the naming rules have been kept through reanalysis (only through 1960):

* Names retired: Bertha, Brenda, Connie, Ethel, Florence, Hazel, Hilda, Janet, Kristy, Norma (Janet for the same storm, Connie and Hazel for different storms than actual)

* Names that would still be available for circulation as of 1961 (pending reanalysis of later decades): Audrey, Carol, Diane, Donna, Edna, Gracie, Ione

From 1911 to 1960, the number of retirements by letter:
A - 4
B - 9
C - 4
D - 7
E - 4
F - 7
G - 3
H - 4
I - 3
J - 4
K - 3
L - 0
M - 1
N - 3
O to W - 0 each
