Yucatan Weather

#1 Postby Frank2 » Fri Jan 03, 2014 4:04 pm

The GFS has shown this for the past 4 days but thought it was just some false data, though it reminds me of a similar disturbance in April, 1979 that was more like a tropical storm when it crossed the area from SW to NE:

HIGH PRESSURE IS BUILDING IN BEHIND LAST NIGHTS FRONT. THERE IS
STILL SOME CLOUD COVER STREAMING OVER THE AREA, BUT OTHERWISE
QUIET WEATHER IS EXPECTED THROUGH TOMORROW MORNING. BY LATE
TOMORROW MORNING, A 500MB SHORT WAVE WILL DEVELOP NEAR THE YUCATAN
PENINSULA AND MOVE NORTHEAST. THIS WILL PUSH MOISTURE OVER SOUTH
FLORIDA WELL AHEAD OF IT. THIS WILL BEGIN TO BRING SOME SHOWER
ACTIVITY TO THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE CWA SATURDAY MORNING. BY
SATURDAY AFTERNOON, THE WAVE WILL DEEPEN SOME AND CONTINUE TO BRING
MOISTURE TO SOUTH FLORIDA. THIS WILL INCREASE THE CHANCES OF
PRECIPITATION CONSIDERABLY BY SATURDAY NIGHT. HAVE KEPT
CATEGORICAL POPS FOR MUCH OF SOUTH FLORIDA THROUGH EARLY SUNDAY
MORNING. THERE IS ALSO THE QUESTION OF THUNDERSTORMS. GFS IS
SHOWING GOOD PVA OVER THE AREA THROUGH THE NIGHT. ALSO, THERE WILL
BE CAPE AND SOME WEAK UPPER LEVEL SUPPORT AS THE TAIL END OF A
250MB JET MOVES FROM NORTH FLORIDA TO THE NORTHEAST. SO, HAVE KEPT
SLIGHT CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS FOR PORTIONS OF SOUTH FLORIDA, BUT
DID TRIM BACK SOME TO BETTER MATCH THE SPC OUTLOOK.

Latest GIF IR loop this afternoon shows quite a lot of convection blowing up and deep tropical moisture is streaming into Southern FL:
