ATL: ARTHUR - Post Storm Analysis

#1 Postby JonathanBelles » Fri Jul 04, 2014 11:58 am

I'm opening this thread so that we can look at old observations, old pictures, ect. We can also look at observations we did not have at the time. This way we can not clutter the thread while Arthur is still ongoing. This is NOT a place to bash to NHC!!

My interest point is in the sound with lowering pressures. I have to wonder if there may have been a slight bump in winds in there somewhere.

I do think there is some chance of an intensity increase to 90 kt (at the time of landfall, which was 0300Z, and at 0600Z), depending on the validity of the SFMR readings while the center was near or just after landfall. Otherwise there is good support for the 85 kt intensity.

I would guess the landfall pressure was 974 mb, with a slight drop to 973 while in Pamlico Sound at 0600Z.

If the winds are up to 105 mph, this is essentially a Bertha clone in terms of intensity. Bertha hit with that same wind speed, with a pressure of 974 mb. I believe Arthur is checking in with a preliminary reading of 973 mb.

What are the highest gusts and sustained winds observed in the landfall area? Have heard several reports but can anyone post a complete summary of numbers

Highest on land I know of are 101 mph gusts and 77 mph sustained (10-min?) at Cape Lookout, NC.

And the strongest winds were probably 35mi off shore in the SE quad
