This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Will Iselle be retired?

#1 Postby HurricaneRyan » Wed Aug 20, 2014 10:50 am

It is the third costliest tropical cyclone in Hawaii after Iniki and Iwa. Both of those names were retired. Plus, Hawaii is a US state and they sometimes nominate storm names to be retired even if they didn't make landfall anywhere (Ioke and Daniel). So it has a better track record than Mexico when it comes to nominations.

Do you think Iselle will be retired after this season?

We have completely run out of I names to replace it with, but yes I do think the name Iselle will be retired.

$53 million in damage? retire, really?

Iniki: $1.8 billion in 1992

Iwa: #312 million in 1982

Look what Hawaii has requested in years past. Storms like Kenneth 05, Daniel 06, and Jimena 03 did next to nothing, yet requested.

Exactly. I don't think I would personally retire Iselle but Hawaii will likely request it to be.

I see you finally have an avatar Yellow Evan :) .

I think due to the media attention, how it affected their Senate election, and its historic nature, I think Iselle will be retired, but I wouldn't bet on it. EPAC retirements are rather fickle.

Yes, but not definitely IMO. It made landfall as a tropical storm on Big Island, and is the only one to do so in recorded history. If it gets retired, I suggest Irina or Ilene to replace Iselle; those two names sound like Irene (but was retired), but it is hard to find other I female names.

It may also not be retired due to a fairly low amount of damages and fatalities over the affected area, and may not be sufficient enough for retirement.

I'd save them for the Atlantic. If Ida gets retired next year, how to treat that? Using a derivative off a retired (or existing) Atlantic name might be useful in the EPAC.
